Applique in May Signature Block

Here we are with the most important block in the Sally Post Floral Sampler quilt. It’s the signature block. I am so thankful Sally took the time to intricately cross stitch her name, age and date on this block. It gives us so much to think about. What was life like in 1854? I’m sure she was an experienced quilter at age 63. It appears as if fabrics were purchased with this quilt in mind. How much did fabric cost in 1854? Was it readily available? Maybe not if red prints had to be substituted. I think I’ll do a little more research. I’m not ready to close the book on our Applique in May quilt.

Dear Gayle,
today we have all pattern for this lovely Quilt, now we just need to applicate them. That will be great fun, I’ll think of you an Sally Post nearly every stitch I make and I hope, one day I’ll come to an end and have a replica of this wonderful quilt in my hands.

Thank you so much for this quilt. I like to think that perhaps Sally was an ancester, sense my DMIL’s maiden name was Post. I know it is a farfetched idea, but nice to ponder! I haven’t started this quilt yet, but it will be my “summer at the cabin” project. I hope you have a wonderful Birthday, and I will be here on that makeup day to catch the two I missed.

Thank you so much for sharing Sally’s quilt with us!
If you look with a magnifier, you will probably see that Sally has cross-stitched her name and date over counted THREADS, similar to counted cross stitch of today.
The availability of fabrics likely depended on where she lived at the time, the transportation available for goods, and of course, her financial ability.

I so looked forward to coming here everyday and seeing all the lovely blocks.. to read your days in May.. to look back and think about the diary and events that took place as the blocks were posted.
When I make my blocks I think I will post the days of memory in my blog for each of them. This will be a wonderful quilt and to have a memory with it will make it even more special

Happy Birthday!!! Thanks for all the Sally Post blocks. I have them all but block 14. I was in Shipsee for 3 days, no access to a computer. I have fabric and started quilt. I am using frayed edge for applique.
