I can’t believe it’s been a month since we started the Just Takes 2 quilt. The time is going by so quickly and everyone’s blocks are really great. The first set of Just Takes 2 blocks for February might leave you shaking your head saying “what the what” or “that’s it” but there’s nothing wrong. We just thought we’d give you a chance to catch your breath for a couple of weeks.

Get out your foundation paper because both blocks are constructed that way. As a combination block and sash design we found the easiest way to make the blocks accurately was to foundation piece them. The 12″ square is a traditional block called Tumbling Blocks by Comfort Magazine or Rocky Mountain Chain by Hearth and Home Magazine. The second block is Flying Geese. Have you noticed? There’s only two blocks this time! Get these finished because on the 15th you’ll be busy again. Scroll down to the bottom of the post to get your blocks.

Check out this little cutie. He or she is part of an adorable little group called Snowbabies! I was working on these at the Dear Jane retreat last November.

They have been fun and easy blocks to work on. The snowy stitching on their little clothing goes really fast.

When you’re ready to sit back and relax with a little embroidery check out the new Snowbabies pattern. There’s 12 blocks and a great setting for a 52″ x 65″ lap quilt in the seventeen page pattern set.

P.S. If you had your own personal quilt geek to answer computer tech questions what would you ask him?

Get out your rotary cutter and ruler!

Set up your ironing station!

Fire up that sewing machine!

It’s January 1st!
We’re off and running – it’s time for the first blocks in the Just Takes 2 quilt!

The response to the Just Takes 2 mystery quilt has been fantastic. Brenda and I are glad you’re as excited about this quilt as we are. You see, we’ll be making the blocks right along with you and sharing our progress on the Just Takes 2 blog.

We are beginning with six blocks. Five of them are 6″ blocks and one is a 12″ block. One is an applique block. One is a combination of piecing and applique and four are pieced blocks. Have you noticed there is redwork embroidery on two of my blocks? If you know me you know I love redwork and embroidered quilts. There were several in the Infinite Variety exhibit and I wanted to include some in my own Just Takes 2 quilt. From time to time throughout the year you’ll see it on different blocks whenever I think it looks nice. If you don’t like embroidery – no problem. It’s not a required part of the quilt. If you do like it you can add your own designs if you want. It you’d like to use the same designs I did you can do that too. We have an instant download in the Online Store you can purchase for (go ahead and laugh) Just $2!

Block 6

I won’t take up any more of your time with details or reminders. I’m sure you’re anxious to download and print the patterns so you can start sewing. There are tutorials for many of the techniques mentioned in the Instructions section and I’ve also put links on the Just Takes 2 page. You can also review techniques in the Dear Jane software. We have fourteen days before you head over to Dear Jane on January 15 to get the next set. I hope you’re as excited as we are and will have a fantastic 2012 with Just Takes 2. Don’t forget to share your blocks on the blog. All you need to do is click on the big red Share Your Quilt button! We’re still working out a few bugs so let us know if you have any problems.

It’s hard to believe it’s October already. As much as I love the beautiful colors fall brings I must confess to not being very happy summer is leaving. It has just flown by way too fast. We do however have the fun and frivolity of Halloween coming up at the end of this month so I thought I’d put links to all of the sections for the Fright Night quilt in one post.

If you haven’t made this little quilt you’re going to love it. The finished size is 23″ x 30″ so it’s the perfect size for a holiday wall quilt. There’s a little patchwork, a little applique and a little embroidery. No tricks, just treats for everyone!

The pattern was presented in three parts and you’ll find a link to each one below –

It’s always a wonderful day when you can go to a quilt show! Yesterday was that kind of a day for me. Not so much for Clutch, he had to stay home but that’s another story.
Every three years the Rumpled Quilts Kin quilt guild puts on their Patchwork in the Pines quilt show in Traverse City, Michigan. I’ve watched it grow over the years and always look forward to it. The show moved to a larger location this year and was held at the Traverse City East Middle School. There were 292 quilts in the show along with lots of other fiber arts. I didn’t photograph every quilt but tried to get quite a few. It was busy! I hope you enjoy the Smilebox slideshow I made and I’ll share my treasures from the merchant’s mall later. If you have time, click on the Patchwork in the Pines text in the paragraph above – there’s a very nice video by TV 9&10 News telling about the show, quilting and one of the guild’s founding members.

If you’d like to see some of the fantastic pictures that are online featuring quilts from the exhibit you can go to the American Folk Art Museum photo pool or search for photos on theFlickr site using the name of the exhibit.

Martha Stewart has some very nice photos on her blog and the exhibit will be featured on Monday’s show. It’s televised on the Hallmark Channel.

If you have an iPad, the free app from the museum is available in the iTunes store. Thank you Brenda, for sharing the link. I couldn’t find an app for the iPhone yet but will keep checking.

For even more red and white quilts, there’s a very nice online show at Repro Quilt Lover. Lots and lots of beautiful quilts and inspiration. If you have a red and white quilt you’d like to share, post it on your blog and you can add it to her online show listing.

I hope you enjoy the eye candy and have a red and white night!

I have always had a thing for red and white quilts. It doesn’t matter if they’re pieced, appliqued or embroidered…….. there’s a special magic in the combination of those two colors.
A fantastic exhibition of red and quilt quilts is opening today in New York at the Park Avenue Armory. It’s the American Folk Art Museum’s Infinite Variety:Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts.

I’m hoping to find some great photos online as the exhibit gets underway and my first discovery is from the museum itself.

This picture is from the Flickr group for the American Folk Art Museum. There are some wonderful pictures of the exhibit as it was being set up. Some of the photos give you a feeling of being inside a red and white tornado of quilts. Great photography!

I have an entire bolt of this stunning red fabric. I have a feeling it won’t be long before I’m inspired to put it in a quilt. No ideas on a design yet but the dreaming has just begun.

I hope some of you have the opportunity to see the exhibit.

If not, you might want to order this great set of red and white magnets from the museum gift shop. I’ll let you know when I find more pictures.

Is there a red and white quilt in your future?

Make sure you don’t fill the circle in – this is what gives the little face it’s character.

Each little face is different. I did the demo one in a hurry. I like this little lady better – so take your time and don’t be afraid to toss one out and make another if you don’t like the way it looks.

Trace the bonnet shape on the dull side of your freezer paper. Cut out the shape on the drawn line. Iron (no steam) the shiny side down on the right side of your bonnet fabric.

Cut out right next to the paper on the upper edge and a scant 1/4″ away from the inside edge. Clip seam allowance on inside curve for applique.

Cut out the face circle on the traced 2 1/2″ circle line. Pin the bonnet fabric to the face circle matching the upper raw edges of bonnet to face circle.

Applique the inside curve of the bonnet to the face fabric. After I finished my applique, I decided black hair would look better with my bonnet so I used the black pigma pen and colored over the brown pen. I accentuated the curls a little bit and like this look better. You can always go from brown hair to black but not the other way around……….

Baste around the upper edge of bonnet to hold it in place.

Turn under a scant 1/4″ around the outside edge.

Baste to hold in position.

Pin your trim to the back side of the prepared face tucking the ends to the wrong side where the bonnet ends. Yikes, that blended dye job on her hair is scary! I need to work in better light and she needs a touch-up!

Trace the flower donut shape on the dull side of your freezer paper, including the dashed stitching lines. Cut out around the outside edge and cut out the inner circle.

With your iron on a wool setting and no steam, iron the shiny side of the freezer paper to the right side of the wool square for the front of your needlebook. Note that I said ‘iron’ and not ‘press’. The freezer paper will adhere easily and you don’t want to flatten your wool by pressing too hard.

Cut out your wool piece around the outside edge of the freezer paper. Because of the thickness of the wool don’t try to pivot your scissors at the deep inner points. Just cut in a flowing line around the shape and we’ll take care of those bits of cleavage in a minute. My favorite scissors for this are the cute little Elan embroidery scissors in the photo. They have a fantastic feel in your hand, are sharp as a razor right to the point, they’re serrated for precision cutting and never seem to get dull. If you can’t find them in your local quilt shop – call Lolly’s Fabrics to order a pair.

Because I’m left handed my pictures probably look backwards to you if you’re right handed. Don’t worry the principal is the same going in either direction. Once you’ve gone around the outside of the shape, go back and cut in the reverse direction nipping out the pivot points. It works like a charm.
Do not cut out the center circle – Rosie needs a place for her face!

Lay the prepared face on top of your wool front lining up the bottom tip of her lips with the mark indicated as the chin position on the pattern piece. Poke a pin through the wool at the chin position point so you’ll be able to get the face in the right place on the wool after the freezer paper is removed.

Pin the face wrong side down, on the right side of wool flower front lining up the tip of the lips with the pin you placed in the wool. Applique around the entire circle using tiny hem stitches. I worked with a single strand of ivory #100 silk thread. I didn’t have to change thread colors when I got to the bonnet fabric area. The ivory silk was fine.

Using the same freezer paper flower shape we’ve been working with, cut out the inside front, inside back and back of the needlebook. Make sure you keep in mind the right and wrong sides of the pieces when ironing the template to your fabric so you’re wool pieces will match when layered together. It needs to be reversed on some of them.

Iron the pattern to the right side of the front.

Iron to the wrong side of the inside front.

Iron to the right side of the inside back.

Iron to the wrong side of the back.

I used a white chalk pencil to mark the detail lines on my wool. Referring to the pattern, I just marked them by eye. If you want to be more precise you can cut along each of the dotted lines on the pattern. Lay the pattern on top of your flower and lift each ‘petal flap’ up to mark next to the edge of the freezer paper on your wool. It really doesn’t have to be exact. No two flowers are alike so take a deep breath and just draw.

Using the a single strand of #8 perle cotton, embroider along the detail lines using a small backstitch. I started at the inside of the flower and worked to the outside edge taking my last stitch right around the raw edge and securing the thread on the wrong side.
Using a single strand of #5 perle cotton, make a French or Colonial knot at the ends of the bonnet for little earring buds. Sewing a bead there would be cute too.

Place the inside back and needlebook back wrong sides together matching raw edges. You can pin these pieces together or use little dots of basting glue around the outside edges keeping the glue at least 1/4″ from raw edges. Using a single strand of #8 perle cotton, blanket stitch around the outside edge of needlebook back.

Prepare the inside front and needlebook front in the same way you did the back. Blanket stitch around the outside edges.

Pin the needlebook front and back together at the top petal.

Using the #8 perle cotton, whip stitch the front and back together by weaving through and around the blanket stitching on the outside edges. I stitched from pin to pin and then back again to make sure it was nice and secure.

Here she is like a breath of springtime.

You can store your needles on the inside of both the front and back. They’ll be protected and ready to use.

I hope you’ve enjoy making Rosie. Be sure to check out the Felted Wool Tutorial if you want to prepare woven wool, wool sweaters or thrift store finds for use in a project like this.

In the next couple of weeks I’ll put Rosie’s tutorial in a PDF format for you so you can download a copy and save it to use again.

If you haven’t signed up for the newsletter, take a minute to do that. Yesterday’s newsletter had a coupon for FREE SHIPPING in the Online Store to celebrate National Quilting Day. The discount code NATQLT can be used until the end of March. I have since found the shopping cart I’m using isn’t set up to offer free shipping. Drat! What’s the matter with them? It’s something that’s done all the time? Can you tell I’m not happy about this? My solution for this promotion is this; the discount code will take 25% off your entire order. If that amount doesn’t cover the shipping charges I will refund the difference when the order is willed. Not perfect but some of you will save more than the free shipping would have been and everyone else will be reimbursed for what the discount didn’t cover. I’ll do better next time.

You never have to worry about shipping costs for patterns purchased in the Stitch It Today – Digital Design Store. They’re all instant downloads. Just add the patterns you want to the shopping cart, make your payment and you’ll receive a link to download the patterns. An email is also sent to you with the links included. If you are a Sentimental Stitcher Member, all of the patterns in the Digital Design Store are already included in the Members Only Section for free. The print patterns remain in the Online Store. It’s getting confusing I know…………I’m working on that.

Tomorrow is the first day of spring. The new embroidered Spring Into Summer Quilt begins. Download the fabric requirements and get your first block. The weekly series will run until the first day of fall in September. Beat the heat working on lightweight embroidered quilt blocks.

My first stop was Liberty Bell Quilts in Cedar. It’s a quick trip down a couple of country roads and I’m there. In fact, I was there a couple of weeks ago for a book signing by Amy Barickman from Indygo Junction. She was introducing her new book Vintage Notions..

The book is one of the most interesting and well presented books I’ve seen in a long, long time. If you like vintage and I don’t mean just quilts, this book is a must have for your library. You can go back to it again and again for interesting reading and inspiring ideas.
Amy and her Mom share a cottage on Torch Lake so she’s here for a few weeks every summer. I hope to see her at one of the shops again.

There’s a table just inside the door at Liberty Bell Quilts and it always has interesting finds or something new on it.

These are some of the new vintage hankies from Moda. The children’s group you can purchase individually or already sewn together by the yard. How cool is that?

This is just a glimpse of the fabrics you’ll find. Lots of great modern and repro collections, flannels, batiks, Kaffe and more including wool and embroidery supplies.

While not part of the official shop hop, I couldn’t resist going in Wool & Honey that’s next door to Liberty Bell.

Inside is a wonderful selection of beautiful yarn, supplies and even handcrafted jewelry. She carries lots of hand dyed yarn from local artists so you can always find something unique and the inventory is constantly changing.

I hope to be back there later this week. I saw the most beautiful shawl knit with a fine gauge, hand dyed yarn in the most yummy colors. A trip to a nearby fiber festival over this past weekend should mean a phone call letting me know more of the yarn is in. I’m going to get some of the beautiful stitch markers made from Michigan stones too when I’m there. I promise to take more (better) pictures for you.
Beautiful yarns, great samples and ideas, friendly and helpful. You can’t ask for more!

From Cedar I made my way to Interlochen which is about 6 miles from the cottage. It’s known world wide for the Interlochen Center for the Arts. I spent a lot of time there growing up. We attended concerts, plays and church on Sundays among the talented artists attending the six week summer camp held each year. Every year there are at least 2500 students in grades 3-12 from over 40 countries attending camp. Felicity Huffman, Josh Groban and Norah Jones are all alumni of Interlochen.

The Interlochen Theme – music to sooth your soul……...

This is Interquilten, a new shop that opened last year. They’ve already moved once after growing so quickly. Their current location is a charming spot that I remember as the Music Box Gift Shop growing up. I love seeing it now as a quilt shop.

The high ceilings make for perfect quilt display and their fabric offerings are growing each week. Earlier this summer I was able to find just the right pink print to complete a baby quilt I was working on.

There’s a nice yarn corner with both basic and specialty yarns for knitting and crochet along with patterns, books, needles, hooks and such.

Each time I stop in I admire the beautiful handcrafted bird houses they have. They are all a little bit different and some have rings on the top if you want to hang them from a hook or ribbon. They cost about $45 which is a bargain considering all the materials and work it takes to create each one.

You’ll find a great mix of fabric styles with something for baby quilts, landscapes, brights, flannels, traditional, holiday, batiks, basics and more. Don’t miss their music theme prints in honor of Interlochen.

They have a growing selection of wool fabrics, patterns and kits. If you are in the area I encourage you to stop in and enjoy a bright and cheery new shop. They have some very nice classes listed on their web site too.
I forgot to get a picture of their version of the shop hop quilt. Oh well, that means I get to take a drive over there and see if I can snap one for you.

That was my last stop of the day. There’s two more shop on the hop before I share the spoils of my labor.

Gosh, I have missed all of you. A trip to Grand Rapids sure sucked the hours out of my days and I’ve had one son and then husband and the other son here at the lake with me for some vacation time so you can imagine how busy it’s been around here. Even Clutch slept for a whole day after everyone went home.

The weather has finally turned to summer so I’ve been trying to finish up the raking, trimming and weeding. Somehow during the weeding process I got myself into rock digging.

I’ve dug and pulled and dug and dug some more. I worked to the point where my son said “Stop Mom, I’ll buy you some rocks”! What a sweetie, but there’s something about unearthing a 50 year old rock garden that pushes me on. I have rested the last couple of days due to age related aches and pains but I’ve got some beautiful stones and only a small section left to check for buried treasure.

Take a look at those steps. Aren’t they the most pitiful mess you’ve ever seen? We thought maybe the chipmunks had been digging tunnels under them and that caused the tip. There’s been much discussion about whether to use a 3 ton jack (whatever that is) to lift them up and put sand underneath. We’ve all thought about taking out our frustrations by smashing them with a sledge hammer and considered just building a section of wood steps right over the top of them but……….

we discovered one of these little buggers is actually the critter who has taken up residence under the steps. He swims under the last section of dock and right down the melon size hole he dug at the shoreline to get to his mansion under the steps.

I got me a lawn chair and got me a gun and just like Granny Clampett I’m going to be hunting muskrat! Wish there was a way to trap and release but he’d be back in no time. Gotta save those steps.

For now Clutch is on muskrat patrol!

Back to stitching – I’ve posted the July blocks for the Sally Post Floral Sampler quilt and the Beyond the Cherry Trees quilt.
The Beyond the Cherry Trees block for July is in honor of the National Cherry Festival that was held this past week in Traverse City.

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels were here this year so most of us locals kept our distance from town so that gave me plenty of time for all that pulling and digging.

Click on the picture to go to it’s Flickr page. You can see the stitching details on the original size photo.

There’s as much going on in this block as there was at the festival. We have hidden stitches galore.

A flower……

and a third flower!

two leaves………..

a star…………

and four cute little hearts in the center!

The border section right above this block has some interesting quilting hidden in the stitches too.

I’ve studied and studied the embroidered stems on the cherries. The thread has faded to nearly white. The dark thread you see in some of the pictures is where I stitched over the lines so I could see them for tracing.

The thread is heavier than quilting thread but not glossy like perle cotton. I’ve looked at tatting thread and haven’t been able to find a color to match the green. Anyone have any ideas?
Each stitch is about a 1/8″ long chain stitch with a single strand of the thread.

The sun is shining and there’s nice weather predicted for late afternoon when the kids come downtown to trick or treat at all the shops. Clutch and I bought four huge bags of candy to hand out and hope we don’t run out before we close at 6 PM. I don’t have trick or treaters here at the lake so it’s fun to see everyone parading through the store.

I want today’s kid to come live at my house. She could iron all my fabric and maybe a shirt or two for Rob who has just about given up on me for ironing anything unless it’s for a special occasion. Actually, I’ve become addicted to steaming. That’s what we use at the store and I’m training the entire family to just hang everything they own, shoot it with the steamer and watch in amazement as the wrinkles fall right out. With all the energy that little girl could save by not pushing around that heavy iron, she could do a little cooking and cleaning so I’d have more time for pattern design and stitching. Sounds like a great Halloween treat to me? Darn, the trick is she’s only a quilters wish………… I do love her dusting hat. My Mom and Grandma told me about wearing them. It makes me wonder how much dust they let accumulate in their houses if they had to wear a hat to protect their hair.
Have a great day everyone, play like a child and eat some chocolate. I’m going for my dark chocolate covered cherries from Cherry Republic. Dark chocolate – good for your heart. Cherries – good as an antioxidant. I can’t go wrong!
