Sally Post Floral Sampler

907 150

This is one of the quilts in my collection I really treasure. It’s determination to have survived 154 years despite being unwanted and peppered with 3/8″ holes over almost all of the red triangles surrounding the blocks makes it deserving of our care and preservation. The red fabric in question is one of those produced using iron as a mordant to set the dye. The dye damaged the fabric so badly that when you wash the quilt the dye will disappear taking the fabric with it. It’s obvious that’s what happened to this beautiful quilt. The other fabrics are nearly perfect. There is a signature block with tiny cross stitch lettering. It reads; Sally Post, 1854. Age 63.
Sally, it’s a privilege to take care of your quilt and share it with others.

I will be posting one block per month for the quilt. Each block will be available online for 2 months after it’s posted. Past blocks will then be available for purchase. Fabric requirements will be posted with the first block and remain available until all the blocks are completed.

Whatever fabrics you choose to make this quilt with I hope you’ll enjoy the journey.

    Gayle,
Are you setting up a page in your website for another sampler quilt? I cannot wait to see what you have planned for us.

will you be posting the patterns to this wonderful quilt ? if so when? love to start this for 2008.

  4. on 24 Jan 2008 at 9:07 am Judy, SC

Gayle, this is a beautiful quilt. Love the colors. Is there a story behind this quilt as your Midget Blocks and State Fair Sampler. If not where can I find the pattern - what book, web site or pattern maker?

  5. on 27 Jan 2008 at 10:32 am Gerda

Gayle, just wanted to say thanks for all the lovely patterns you have posted for us! I hope to get started on them this spring, once we finish building our house! I have very little free time right now. I sure hope to find out where to get the pattern for the Sally Post Civil War quilt - love applique! Will you please let us know?

Thanks, and stay warm and safe! Gerda in Alberta, Canada

    Gayle,
I have been looking for a Block of the Month that was applique and charming. This quilt sure fills that order.
I love that the flowers are more ‘casual’ than most applique (that are formal) so they are light and breezy looking…….Sally did a great job
thanks for bringing this charmer to us

    Hi Gayle,

I love this quilt and would like to start block #1, but the pattern won’t print out for me. The instructions, red frame, and small pic in lower left corner all print, but not the applique templates. Have not had any problem with any of the midget blocks. Any suggestions?

I like it very much. The colors are looking
    like fresh strawberries.

I just found your site and have fallen in love with this quilt as I love applique more than any form of quilting. Thank you for such a beautiful quilt. I look forward to making this through the year. I hope I can just keep up!! Dolly, Akron, Oh

It is hardly to believe that someone made this quilt 154 years ago. I love the quilt, she is beautiful. Let us hope that 150 years from now someone takes care of our quilts the same way you are doing with this quilt.
Thank you very much for sharing the pattern with us.

Great quilt! Is each block design used only once or multiple times?

  12. on 08 Feb 2008 at 9:09 am Judy, SC

Gayle, Is the entire pattern available for purchase now? Would love to do this for my niece’s college graduation.
    Thanks, Judy, SC

    Dear Gayle,
The Sally Post quilt is gorgeous!!! I love it!
However, I am having a problem printing the first block. All I get is the small block in the corner, the border and the bottom with Sentimental Stitches. Please help!
    Thank you,
    Brenda

I see the fabric requirements but has the pattern for the first block been posted? I would really love to do this quilt.

  15. on 26 Feb 2008 at 7:48 am Carol

Gayle, I just love this quilt. I think I saw it at the Grand at one time and have been thinking about it since. Thanks so much for posting this for us. I’m looking forward to every month now!

Love this quilt anxiously waiting for block #2.

  17. on 27 Feb 2008 at 9:09 am Judy, SC

    Bev & Brenda,
Glad to know I am not the only one who cannot get the pattern to print. Have the same problem with #61 of the Midget Blocks and the border for State Fair. Thankfully a friend is doing the same quilts and was able to print the patterns for me. Tried the Sally pattern again this morning and still not able to print pattern just page border and written instructions.

Gayle, just to let you know I am putting the sashings on the State Fair Sampler. How was this quilt quilted?
Hope you are surviving the snow in MI.
    Judy, SC

  18. on 28 Feb 2008 at 11:13 am marie

I have all the material for this quilt, but I’m a little afraid to start it. Are the blocks supposed to be posted ever month?

  19. on 02 Mar 2008 at 5:39 am Terrie

I would also like to know if the entire pattern is for sale. I did not see it in the store online. I absolutly love this quilt. But one block a month time means I will never finish it.

  20. on 03 Mar 2008 at 2:22 pm Penny from Canada

I made a mistake while trying to down load the SP patterns….if you click on the “picture” it comes up as a “flicker” page with little on it but if you click on the lettering”block 1″ or “block 2″ the pattern pops ups….hope this helps those of you having trouble getting the patterns….

  21. on 08 Mar 2008 at 1:01 am Fiona from England

Oh,no, another quilt I’ve fallen in love with! and it’s applique too!

I do the majority of my applique on my daily train commute to and fro work - thank goodness it’s a 4 hour round trip!

One block a month with all my other projects - will do me just right!

    Many thanks Gayle.

  22. on 10 Mar 2008 at 11:29 am Gayle

Jacque asked a great question - all of the blocks in the quilt are different. There are 36 designs.

  23. on 10 Mar 2008 at 2:25 pm Gayle

Some of you have asked if there is a pattern available for the entire Sally Post quilt. I haven’t gotten that far in my thinking yet. If I do put something together, you’ll read about it in the newsletter so be sure to subscribe if you haven’t done that.

  24. on 10 Mar 2008 at 7:37 pm Gayle

I’m not sure why some of you are having a problem printing the block patterns. I eliminated a large portion of the border which reduces the file size. Hopefully that will solve the problem. They PDF files are opening and everything is shown. Let me know if you’re still having trouble. Remember to click on the text below the picture to access the file.

Love the Sally Post sampler quilt. I have printed block one and two and wonder if there will be more blocks to print. Thanks so much.

  27. on 05 Apr 2008 at 9:56 am Annette in Central Alberta

Gayle, do you have a close-up photo of the fabric that has been destroyed by the iron mordant? Maybe there would be a clue there as to what the original colours were. I’m a hand-dyer with, OMG!, 27 years of dyeing experience a lot of which was with ‘natural’ dyes.

  29. on 15 Apr 2008 at 11:15 am Diane

Oh I love this quilt too. The last thing I need is another applique project, but this one is great. I started printed the patterns out and am keeping them very organized in a nice binder with page protectors. If nothing else, I’ll have a beautiful book to look at!

  30. on 04 May 2008 at 1:30 pm Barb

I’ve been checking for the Sally Post block all day, and it hasn’t appeared yet. It’s now 4:30 and I’m concerned about missing blocks, since they will only be up for 1 day each. What time will you usually post, or did I misunderstand something in the newsletter? Thanks for your help, Barb And PS — I love your blocks you offer.

    Hi Gayle,

You have been really busy the past two weeks!!

I am so sorry to hear about your grandma. Sounds like you had a really nice relationship with her. She really lived a long life and lived through hard times and good times and saw lots of things happen in this world.

Sorry to hear about your tree. We had some pretty bad weather here in Kansas City this past week. We were even on World News!!! Lots of people lost their homes and some even their lives.

I am glad you are putting applique blocks on every day this month. I like when you do that. Gives me something to get up for. lol

Happy Anniversary to you and your husband!!!

    Hi Gayle,
This quilt is just beautiful! Thank you for
putting it up. I will have to get moving now that
a block will be up every day this month.
I am having trouble finding solids to use. Do you have any recomendations on the colors and fabrics to
use for applique. I would like to stay as true to the quilt as possible.
    Thanks so much.

    Hello

HELP! I looked at the site early last week and block 4 wasn’t up, but now I find that you’re putting up a block each day so I’ve now missed blocks 4 and 5. Is there any way of accessing these again?

    Many thanks

    Fiona in England

  37. on 06 May 2008 at 9:42 pm Fiona

    Hello Gayle

My most abject apologies for my last e-mail. I had gone into blind panic when I saw that block 6 was up on your site and I am working currently on block 3. Then I read your note that each block would be up for just 24 hours and paniced! Should have read the rest of your letter, but since I was somewhat “illegally” reading your site at work I didn’t read it properly or in full.

I should have scrolled down! So I have just printed off blocks 4 and 5 - thank you so much for your generosity in sharing the patterns and congratulations on your 30th wedding anniversary.

Finally, in the words of a renowned British film director - Michael Winner - who fronts a TV advert for an insurance company - I will use the phrase “Calm down, dear!”

I have missed several blocks, but was able to print block #10. Since then I only see block #10 available. Is there a block 11 or 12? Am I missing which page the blocks are available?

  51. on 14 May 2008 at 5:15 pm Barbara

I have been looking for block 13 was it posted?
I am very disappointed about not being able to download all the pattern offered.
I was under the impression they would be available for a longer period of time not 24 hrs I have no computer available on the week-end so I have missed some of the patterns I do-not very often do applique
but for some reason I really would like to do this one

    Hi,

I love this quilt too. It’s so spring, bright, & wonderful. It’s been a long winter where I live. Just found this site a week ago. So will the other Sally blocks be posted for each month on the Block of the month page? I’d love to get the other blocks too. Missed 4-18. Hmmmmmm It’s sure a cute quilt and fun to see.

    Thanks!

A big thank you to Gayle for all your hard work. I am greatly enjoying making the blocks although I had a slight hic-cough at the beginning as the green fabric I ordered on-line was too thick, so I wasn’t getting points where points were required, so I started again with fabrics I have had for about 5 - 14 years! See, the statsh does get raided occasionally LOL.

I’m pleased to read that you will be celebrating your birthday by sharing with us all the blocks, I missed just 4 of them whilst I was away in Germany at a conference. I didn’t find an internet cafe until the last day, by which time it was too late! But I got some stitching done between conference sessions and ummm… during certain presentations!

There’s not much talk about how everyone is progressing and what fabrics you are using, etc. I’ve started a new folder on my webshots and as you’ll see I’m sticking fairly faithfully to the original colours, but then they suit my cottage which is very old.

    Once again Gayle, many thanks

Gayle, you are too kind!!!! I am really excited about this quilt. As president in charge of really old ladies with way to many UFOs I was feeling very low and discouraged and Sally Post spoke directly to me. I’ve been keeping up dayly but I wanted to print off the close up pictures of the original blocks. Can someone tell me how to print those pictures without printing 17 pages? In addition to being old I’m rather computer illiterate. Have been searching for fabric without much luck. Any advice and council gratefully accepted. I can’t wait to get started. It looks a lot more manageable than Little Brown Bird!

  61. on 05 Jun 2008 at 11:36 am sharon

Gayle, just to say “thank you” for the time you have taken to post all the quilt blocks and info for this Sally Post Quilt. It is truly a “gem”. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for opening my mind and eyes to have the desire to hand applique this quilt. I will probably be the age Sally was when she did her last patch ..I am going to be 59 soon. Oh yoi!!!! that is scary.
Seriously, I just want to let you know, you are my first site I check every morning.
Thank you for sharing these wonderful quilts with all of us via the internet. WE are your “circle of friends…internationally”! Very unique!
    Say HI.. to clutch.

    Sincerely, Sharon from Pennsylvania

Gayle, Thank you so much for all your work in drawing the designs for these blocks. I love your site and look forward to your next project. I have taken the time to do a placement breakdown of the blocks from the pictures you provided us this morning. I would be glad to share the breakdown with anyone who wants it if they e-mail me at u2g07431@mail.wvnet.edu.

If you don’t want this information shared, please let me know and I won’t send it out.

I have missed all of the blocks from May and I missed the makeup day because I was in Italy with my daughter and new baby granddaughter. Is there any way to get the blocks that I missed? I think this is a beautiful quilt. I have been quilting with my oldest granddaughter since she was 4 years old. We have made 4 quilts together. She turned ten this year and I think this would be a good project for us to work on for her new baby sister which is due in September. Thank you.
