Shipshewana Amish Mystery Quilt

This is a mystery quilt. The blocks may not be posted every month so be sure to sign up for to receive the newsletter because I’ll be sending a reminder to let you know when one is there.

The quilt is a lap size quilt with a combination of pieced and applique blocks. They won’t all be the same size. I’ll be using traditional Amish solid color fabrics reflective of the Amish communities in the Midwest section of the United States. Did you know they are different from those who live in Pennsylvania?
I’ve come to greatly love and respect the Amish (and the English) who call this area home. Each block will reflect something special that has touched my heart and hopefully will touch yours while giving you a better understanding of the community.

All sections have been posted.

    Hi Gay,

What a fabulous website, can’t think why I haven’t taken the time to check it out earlier. I’ll be back alot. The patterns and pictures are wonderful and I especially liked the stories with the Nancy Page patterns. I have all of the patterns for the Laurel Wreath quilt, they were in a box of scrapbooks from the 30’s that I purchased.
If you’re going to be at the small block sisters meeting on next Saturday, I’ll see you there.

Congratulations Gayle – looks like you’ve hit on a BOM quilt that is going to be HUGE in the quilt world! I’ll be going to Shipshewana to pick up fabric…will Lolly’s or Yoders have a fabric pack for this? If not, how many different colors are you suggesting?? The layout you’ve posted is so interesting. I’m SO excited about this one!

wOW! i HAVE STUMBLED ON ANOTHR of your wonderful entries. Thank you for the time you take to give so many so much pleasure. Now I visit your site every day, sometimes it the last thing I do at night, and have very pleasant dreams. Cheers ,

  29. on 10 Mar 2008 at 9:37 am Gayle

I’ve been asked what color fabric I’m going to use for the background on the Amish quilt and the answer is black. If you go shopping for fabric remember there are blacks and then there are blacks. Gray black, blue black, red black and the black as dark as night. The dark as night is the one you want. Seems like the last bolt I purchased was from RJR Fabrics. I believe Keepsake Quilting is selling a nice solid color black but when in doubt, call Yoder Department Store in Shipshewana, Indiana and the girls in the fabric department can help you. How much to buy? I usually get 3 yards for a quilt this size.

  30. on 11 Mar 2008 at 8:06 am Gayle

    Cindi -

You’re brilliant! I should hire you for marketing. A kit for this quilt? Now why didn’t I think of that?
I have the first block group ready to post but have been busy with other things and haven’t gotten to it. I’ll take a look at fabric requirements and if I can’t put something together I’ll talk to Lolly’s about putting together a kit.
    Thanks for the great idea.

  47. on 30 Mar 2008 at 11:13 am Theresa

    Hi Gay,
I’d love to be included. Anything Amish excites me. I am beginning to love the way that solids work together. I think I heard from Edith and Janis that the RJR black is the best. And a kit from Yoders or Lolly’s is an exceptional idea. Although I certainly have plenty of solids and will probably allow myself to get some more at my next visit to Shipshewana.

    Hello Gayle~
I dearly enjoy your site which has/is providing me with sooo much ammunition for my creative needs, and do want to be on your newsletter list. Our only sewing centre is closing this month, and has sold most stock that is of interest to quilters, so I would appreciate hearing from you, when time permits of course, the yardage amounts of which Amish colours I shall need to get when I do travel. I won’t be able to get a kit as I will need to do this$$$ over time.
I hope you and Clutch take some rejuvenation time now and then…. we sure don’t want you to ‘crash’!!!

  60. [...] Sorry this has to be such a short note this morning but it’s already 9:30 am and I’ve got places to go and people to see. One of the things on my list is to put together the first installment of the Shipshewana Amish Mystery quilt. I’ll upload it later today. There have been a few changes around here. A new water park and visitors center have opened. Never thought I’d see the day when a water park would be here but here it is! [...]

So much “crazy weather” all around, I’m hoping for good traveling. I don’t really know how to pack, so will take clothes that I can layer or remove.

I have my stitching packets ready to take along.

    Hi Gayle,
love the new addition to the Amish quilt!! It is going to be stunning!!….I am home from looking after my grandson’s and daughter’s house! Had a great time but it tired me out….. now after I beat my own home back into shape and mow the lawn I hope to start…..

Gayle, Love these blocks!!! I did find the list of colors, but I noticed when you give the directions for the blocks, you don’t give the color you are using. Is this something you could do, or is there a reason you don’t give the colors? Just wondering!! Not sure if I am on your mailing list, so would you please add me?!! Thank you sooo much, Wendy

Sorry you’re having “issues” (nasty business that spam) but frankly, I needed the breathing space anyway. I absolutely adore – no – I absolutely love your patterns.

You’ve kept me super busy for the past 2 years – I completed 2 of the State Fair Samplers last year and some smaller projects in between the months. I did 3 of the Sally Post Floral Samplers this past year – 2 in her size and 1 98×98 for my DS bless his heart which I finished the end of November. In between I’m working on the Shipewana project – which gives me the combined piecing and applique – which keeps me excited.

Since was tired of knitting socks over the holidays, I thought I’d whip up a Tulip Bouquet so I could swap out the wall hanging above my bed. After I put it together, I realized what a great twin bedspread it would make if I put 2 panels together. I’m using a 4″ braided border with 1/2″ seperator strips top and bottom plus maybe a 5 inch background piece for length. I’m in the process of making smaller tulips for the sides for width – haven’t figured out “all” the details yet – guess it’ll tell me what goes where. It’ll be for my oldest daughter – she has MS and lives in a nursing home – it will certainly brighten up her area and I’ll tell her you gave us the gift of the pattern………Thank you so very much.

    Hi,
I signed up for the newsletter, too, and I haven’t received anything. I am also confused. Are there more blocks to the Shipshewana Amish Quilt available yet? I can only get the first four. Please let me know as I am anxious to see the rest of it. What I have seen is absolutely wonderful.
    Thanks!

  161. on 29 Jan 2009 at 7:04 pm Barbara Manchester

When will the remainder of the blocks for the Shipshewana-Amish quilt be posted. I have th four that are currently listed.

    Thank you.

  162. on 01 Feb 2009 at 8:12 am Judy C

Please, please advise ALL OF US how you see this mystery quilt taking shape. You said 2008? – or did you mean 2009? – 2010? I wait and wait, look and look, hope and hope and still we have not moved from the first four blocks. I have never received notification of a block (for the first four) being posted, so not sure if that works. Please advise. I am anxious in NC. I think it is beautiful so far, but would like to complete it. THank you “sew” much for ANY information.

Is this it? Will the remaining blocks ever be listed for this quilt? I keep coming back but there never seem to be any thing beyond 5. Since the last posting was in early May I am thinking this is it and there will be no more blocks. How sad. It sure did look like it was going to be a fun one! Has anyone heard anything?

  170. on 09 Jun 2009 at 10:10 pm deb

Hi Gayle.. thought you would like to know that I am doing this wonderful myster in Batiks… I am kinda glad that you have taken your time with posting the blocks cause it gave me time to catch up. I appreciate your generosity in developing these patterns for us to make and look forward to see what becomes of this wonderful mystery..

Just wondering what the time line is that you see this mystery taking. I don’t think your email signup works as I have never received an email that a new block posted. I really need to know how long this mystery will take. I am leary of making blocks for a mystery quilt that may never be. Thanks for ANY information.

Another quilting friend suggested I see your site. Whacko! I am rapt. In 1997 my husband and I toured the States for a year in an RV and I fell in love with Shipshewana, Goshan, Napanee area and all the craft it offers. Thank you so much for all that you do for we keen quilters.

Should we give up on the Shipshewana Mystery quilt? I purchased all the suggested fabrics to make it, but there have not been any new blocks available for a very long time. It is really disappointing to not get any new sections. Will this project continue?

When are we going to get more patterns for this quilt. One tends to lose interest when it goes soooo long between patterns. Hint hint.

J’aime beaucoup votre quilt Amish, puis je mettre sur votre liste. J’ai les 7 premier blocs, comment faire pour avoir les autres. Merci d’avance pour votre aide. J’aimerais le continuer et le terminer. A bientôt, merci.

O.K. I have seven sections to the Shipshewana Amish Quilt. How many more blocks will we get? Is it going through 2010 also? I am hoping to make this piece for my 87 year old mom for Christmas this year!

    Gayle,
I have been anxiously looking for the completion of this quilt. Haven’t seen any new ones since Jan. Also, are there going to be any new Midget Blocks, last one there was Feb.
    Thanks,

Hi Gayle: I just wanted to thank you for the pattern you have shared with us. Can you tell me how much black fabric you used? I have a couple of projects to finish up and I’ll start this next. I have all the other fabric collected. I very much enjoy your patterns.

I really prefer the section 4 you have completed on your home page (Pieced rather than applique flowers). Any way you can share this design as an option for section 4? Thanks much

    Hola Gayle:

Estoy muy contenta de haber conocido esta pagina, y estoy muy ansiosa por realizar este quilt. Y lo pienso proponer en nuestro grupo de patch, estamos en un rincón en Caracas.
Muchas, muchas gracias por tu trabajo.

Thank you. I have been collecting the patterns and can’t wait to make it.

    Gayle,
I think the vase in Section 4 is beautiful, but I see you have not used it in your layout. Now that I see it without I think I, also, like the pieced option better. (As beautiful as they are the applique seems a little out of place in this quilt). Are you going to post a pattern for Section 4 “option”?

  228. on 06 Jul 2010 at 3:39 pm adriana suarez

    Gayle.

Thanks SO MUCH for sharing this beautiful pattern! Can’t wait to make it!

I’ve been checking out the Shipshewana mystery quilt periodically since I discovered your web site last year. I love the design and can’t wait to get started (well, it takes me a while). I thought I read in your March 2010 newsletter that you would give some information about the fabric requirements. Was I dreaming or did I miss this? Cyndy
