State Fair Sampler

State Fair Sampler
Based on an antique quilt that won Second prize at the Ohio State Fair and Fourth prize at the Central States Exhibition held during the early 1900s, this is sure to be a treasure when completed.

56 six inch pieced blocks. Even though this is listed as a Block of the Month, if I had to take almost 5 years to make this quilt I’d never get there. I’m going to post 4 blocks each month and that way you can be done is just over a year.

This quilt is was originally a two-color quilt, some of my husband’s favorites. I have yards and yards of a beautiful red rose tone-on-tone print. I”m going to use that with one of my favorite background, the Snowhite solid we have in the online store. Just because I’m using two colors, doesn’t mean you have to. This would be really cool in Civil War reproductions, 1930s reproductions, hand dyed fabrics or sparkling batiks! No matter what you choose, you can’t go wrong. I’ll tell you the easiest way to piece the blocks so they’ll be problem free.

The finished size of the quilt is 67″ x 75″. You’ll need to purchase 7 1/2 yards of a background/sashing fabric of your choice. If you’re going to make a two color quilt I suggest buying 8 yards of your color

Click on the the text under each little quilt to download that group of blocks. This was a free block of the month during 2007. Blocks were available for one year from the time they were posted. Retired block sets can be purchased. If a set is retired, the link will take you to the State Fair Sampler pattern page in the Online Store.

what a lovely, beautiful quilt! I love the combination of the 2 colors blue and white.
I have been making a quilt for my daughter in blue and white. It isn’t finished yet. With your quilt you give me many ideas to finish my UFO. So, thank you very much.

IMPORTANT: If you downloaded Blocks 5-8 before Oct. 6, 2006 there is a mistake in the paper piecing pattern for Block 7. The center square (7) should be your background color. Computer design programs are wonderful but only work as well as the person who is operating them. I messed up this time. I hope it hasn’t caused anyone too many problems.

  5. on 09 Oct 2006 at 9:50 pm Avonne

For some reason I can’t get blocks 5-8 to print. I have tried repeatly. Can you help me? Don’t know what I am doing wrong , if anything. Thanking you in advance for you assistance.

    BROKEN LINK FIXED:
I have no idea why the link to the patterns for blocks 5-8 was not working properly. I uploaded the pages again and it seems to be working fine now. Please email me right away if anyone has a problem.

Thank you so much for this and the midget blocks. My Yahoo group has become very excited about the State Fair blocks and may use it as a individual monthly challenge. How often do they come out?

  14. on 01 Dec 2006 at 1:06 am Rae

December 1, I’m here waiting for the the new blocks. Sweden is ahead of you time wise, so I think I’ll have to wait a few more hours. I think I can do that. Love printing out the new patterns each month. Thanks again.

Thanks for doing such a good job on making these blocks. They sew up so easy. I am caught up (have 18 blocks done) and waiting for the next installment. What size strip will the sashing be? (If that’s not getting to far ahead of you),it would be fun to start to put the rows together. Of course I could just decide and go with either a cut 1 3/4″ or 2″. Thanks! I enjoy your website too.

Since my husband has been wanting a blue & white quilt this is perfect. I am using different blues for blocks. Would like to start looking for the blue fbric for border. Without getting ahead of you could you tell me how much blue fabric is required for the border? Thank you, Judy

This a beautiful quilt. I have always wanted to do a two color quilt and this is perfect…
    Thanks

How do you download and print the instructions? I have been doing it on the midget blocks, but can’t seem to make this one work.

  23. on 26 Jan 2007 at 7:18 pm Karen

Thanks for sharing such a wonderful gift with us. I love State Fair and Midget blocks. You’re the best!

  24. on 28 Jan 2007 at 6:59 pm Theresa

I had a bit of difficulty finding the copy of the patterns to print. I finally realized that you had to click on the actual words: Blocks 1-4 etc. I had been clicking on the picture of the quilt and only getting a larger copy of that particular picture. Simple, I know. I had to be very careful where I put the cursor. Thanks for this most interesting web site. I just wish I had time to make all the blocks I have printed from your site. And now my printer is telling me that I’m almost out of black ink - darn! Gay, you can tell that you are a teacher! Great instructions.

    Hello,

Where can I find the patterns for this quilt?

  26. on 05 Feb 2007 at 11:28 am Marilyn

Gail, thank you for a wonderful website - I think there is enough material on it to keep me quilting until my fingers and eyes no longer work. You are very generous in sharing these patterns with us.

If we are displaying your quilts anywhere, what name do we use when giving credit? The site name of Sentimental Stitches?

  29. on 21 Feb 2007 at 6:27 am Teresa

I am not a “blue” person, but I bought some blue/yellow prints last week not knowing what I was going to use them for. Now I know. I am so excited.

  34. on 29 Mar 2007 at 3:31 pm Pat

I just love this quilt. i am starting this in purpe and cream…was wondering though how big to cut the sashing? this escapes me on to where to find that….any hints or ideas?

    Pat

  35. on 03 Apr 2007 at 5:12 pm Maree Graff

    Hi Pat,

I asked gayle the same question about the size of the sashing, as I want to make my quilt ‘quilt as you go’. The sashing is 2 inches finished (or 2 1/2 inches unfinished). Hope this helps.

Now I am anxiously waiting the next set of blocks. Hopefully it will have the remaining blocks for row 2 and then I can put 2 rows together and start quilting.

    Take care

I too am hoping for blocks #37 -56, so many of these are delightful and I really want to finish the puzzle!!Thanks for all of your work!!

  47. on 01 Jun 2007 at 6:44 pm Gayle

If you’d like to start cutting your sashing pieces they should be cut 2″ x 6 1/2″. The finished width is 1 1/2″.

When I opened the file, guess what? 39 and 40 are there but 37 and 38 are missing in action??? Are they running along the road to the lake house trying to catch up? lol…. I will wait for a few days and check again when 37 and 38 run in the door after thier long walk…..take care and thanks you again for these wonderful blocks….Penny

Just wondering if we are going to get patterns for the remaining blocks. You did say that you would post patterns on the weekend, but there has been 2 weekends since that message.

I too seem to be having great difficulty downloading the 29-32 block patterns. I get the message that the file is damaged. I tried to download twice - quite a feat, considering that I have dialup internet service. Would I be able to have them emailed to me? Thank you for all your work in regards to this quilt.

I have just been checking to make sure I haven’t missed any patterns when I noticed no.24 is missing from picture from no.25 onwards then no.41 takes it’s place and is slightly different. Have I missed something somewhere?

  62. on 07 Aug 2007 at 7:29 pm Kaye

Will you notify us when the correction is made to blocks 29-32? Thanks for giving us all these wonderful patterns. My favorite is the paper piecing. Thanks again. Kaye

    Hello!

I have a question or it’s better to say I found a mistake you might jave done. The block 41 is similar with the block 24!
I don’t know if tjis is on purpose, but I just wanted to let you know!
Oh and I have to tell you that this Quilt is amazing and so georgious…just incredable.
Thanks for sharing this with us!

  68. on 25 Sep 2007 at 11:39 am Karen Wright

    Gayle,
I too have wondered about blocks 24 and 41. Initially 24 was in the second row the second block from the left. Then immediately after it disappeared from the overall layout of the quilt. When you published block 41 I noticed the similarity, but block 24 has a narrower center than block 41.
Could you fill us in on what we are missing?
In the meantime, I love the quilt and am planning to make it in batik’s. I have the fabric and will be preping several blocks for a retreat I am going to the first weekend in October.
What a wonderful way to celebrate the beginning of Autumn.
    Thanks, Karen

I posted the same question back on 5th August re: blocks 24 & 41. I guess we’ll just have to wait until the whole quilt is downloaded to see if we’ve missed anything.

WOW! Almost done. thank you for all the blocks. God bless, Emmy

  71. on 19 Oct 2007 at 8:03 am Bernice

The difference between Block 24 and Block 41 is that
the corners are different. One (24) uses squares and Block 41 uses rectangles. Thanks for some great
patterns. Do you have the names of all of the blocks.
I have tried to find names for all of them and I am still missing a few that I could not find. Thank you for the time and effort your have put into producing these blocks. Bernice in California

The quilt group I am involved with started the state fair sampler in september 2007 as planned. The blocks are flying out of our machines faster than I thought they would. The colour choices are just fabulous!! One of the gals is up to block 39 already and although I have just started back to quilting last tuesday, today I cut out block 19!! Yikes!! I hope those last 4 blocks get here quick!!

  77. on 20 Nov 2007 at 2:19 am Maree Graff

    Hi Gayle,

Could you please confirm that the sashing is cut 2″ wide (1 1/2″ finished), also could you please tell me the width of the 2 inner borders and also the outer triangular border. I am hoping to get the top together to show at my quilting group’s meeting on Tuesday night.

Thank you so much for the wonderful pattern, I am going to miss my monthly patterns. I there anyway that we can post photos of our finished quilts, I for one would love to see everyone else’s quilt.

    Take care

    Hello again Gayle,
I just down loaded[with much excitement I might add] the last of these lovely blocks and was thinking to myself that “now we are complete”. As I was gazing on the last of the filled in squares and admiring the palate with all the holes filled in I came to the stark realization that we didn’t get the triangles for the border or the sashing measurements for the inner borders as I had hoped. [they look narrower than the 2" x 6 1/2" sashing measurement that you gave us back in June]Next month right???? This is like a thriller novel, a cliff hanger to the end!! Happy Thanksgiving!

  81. on 25 Nov 2007 at 4:43 pm Emmy

WOW Is this all of the blocks now?! This is great. I will start this next year as well. Thank you Gayle for all your work putting these and other projects on your site. God bless, Emmy

  82. on 26 Nov 2007 at 5:26 am Yvonne Moser

I have solved the mystery of blocks 24 and 41……41 DOES NOT exist ……….I printed out a copy of the finished quilt and marked each block as I found them in the quilt…….there are 2 blocks of #2 and 2 blocks of #3……and #41 is no where in that quilt…….if anyone would like to do what I did and see for yourself go ahead……so #41 was just a fluke…….but it is still a beautiful quilt and I can’t wait to make it………and we still end up with 56 blocks………thanks Gayle for doing this for us………

  83. on 26 Nov 2007 at 11:15 am jolie

Thanks for all the blocks!! You did great work.

  84. on 28 Nov 2007 at 1:24 pm Carol

I’m just waiting for the final block before making a start on this wonderful quilt. Am thinking of making it for my step-daughter, in black and white, as this is her favourite colour combination. Can’t wait to start. Thank your for all the time and effort that you have put into posting these for us to use.

Thank you, Gayle, for all the beautiful blocks. I can’t wait to start working on it. Also, thanks to Yvonne to solving the mystery of the two #2 blocks and two #3 blocks. After printing out the picture of the entire quilt, and enlarging it for my “old” eyes, I think the #41 block is the one in the second row, second block, not the #24 block. I don’t think it really matters which one you use.

Thanks again for all your hard work and I hope everyone enjoys making their quilts.

  87. on 13 Dec 2007 at 3:58 pm Penny from Canada

for those that haven’t started the state fair sampler yet a word of advice; my group has been working on it since september…. we have found that block 24 works out perfectly where as block 41 does not…. there is a slight difference in the size of the 1/2 squares just below each corner and the block won’t go together, so save yourself some time and frustration and use #24 rather than #41! We all know how busy Gayle is and somehow the 1/4″ mistake on that piece got by her. Happy quilting….

Love the quilt. Have most of my browns to get started - better late than never.
Would like the finishing border measurements if you have time. Know how busy you are.

Okay, I have one block left to make. Several of my friends have commented that the quilt is beautiful. I made it all with different beige tone backgrounds and different blues left over from two other quilts. Now all I need is the border. Will you be posting the border or should I just go ahead and draft one? Again, thanks for a great quilt.

I am the only one that is hoping for the dimensions or a pattern for the triangles that border this quilt?

I too just found this website and have made 9 of the State Fair blocks so far, and plan on working non-stop this weekend to get as many done as I can. This is my first sampler quilt and it’s just lovely! I too am waiting patiently for the border pattern. It really compliments and completes the quilt! I am in Mattawan, MI. Do you have a store in Grand Rapids I can visit?

Hi Gayle - I am in Penny’s group and took a little hiatus so am only on Block 14. I’m doing it in black and white for my daughter and plan on sticking in a red heart block for her!
