Oh my goodness! I have read at least a half dozen instructions about back basting and could just not understand it. The light has finally gone on! Thank you for your clear instructions and pictures! I finally get it! though I don't know why this was so hard to get into my head :-)

Hi once again. I am using backbasting & showing my friends. I love it & don't think I will use any other way. After tracing the design on the back of the fabric I can just sit in my chair & do the rest. No templates or fiddley bits. Love it.

I learned to do back basting several years ago and would never do any other method. There is very little prep work. I have done the Little Brown Bird quilt using this method. I would have never considered doing this quilt using any other applique method. Your applique pieces always fit and are so accurate.

Hi Lucy,

Everything gets better with practice and you'll start to pick up on those areas where you think you might get bunching of the background fabric. My guess it happened on a large size piece. There are many times where I'll use 3 or 4 of the Clover Applique Pins, working a couple of inches ahead of where I'm appliqueing and pulling out my basting threads. Have the pins run parallel to the seam line just far enough down so your seam allowance doesn't hit them when you turn it under. That's just enough to keep things from shifting on larger pieces and you avoid the bunching. I hope that was clear enough to understand. Yours is a good question and maybe I should add a few more diagrams to the tutorial. I appreciate the feedback.

Thanks for the awesome & easy to understand pics, great tutorial! I have never tried traditional applique before (I have done a bit of playing with Steam-A-Seam2) and I enjoyed the attempt. The center of my backing fabric ended up lumpy and bunched a little, do you have any tips to avoid that, or is it something that will come with time and practice? Thanks!

I found the reference to your tutorial on a group I belong to and it is great. The best part is we are both left-handed!! No one ever shows the "how" for us-THANK YOU. I do love needleturn but I am anxious to try and learn to do this method.

Hi thanks for sharing your backbasting. I have tried 3 different methods of needleturn applique & yours looks great. Can't wait to try it. Having a system that saves time is an extra bonus.
