Beyond The Cherry Trees – Block 16 – Going in Circles

Way back in October I selected this block to be the first of 2011 because I knew it would take a long time to complete. I love settling in with a 'winter project' after the holidays. I also had stacks of patterns and antique pictures I was ready to upload to the new membership section for the Sentimental Stitcher members but right after the Dear Jane Retreat things around here started to spin out of control and my life looks just about as bad as this months block.

Many of you know my Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's several years ago and for quite a while has been living in a memory care unit. Shortly after the Dear Jane Retreat in November she fell out of bed during the night and broke a bone in her face. Yes, there was a trip to the emergency room in an ambulance and boy, oh boy, one whole side of her face swelled up something terrible and turned every shade of black and blue you can imagine. After a few days, the swelling started to go down and she was beginning to recover. We took her for a scheduled follow-up appointment with the doctor and she checked out pretty good. Her bruises began to fade and I thought we were on the road to recovery.
Sadly, her bruises weren't the only things that were fading........and fading fast. Within a couple of weeks we were talking with Hospice because she was no longer able to stand or walk, didn't want to eat, couldn't really speak and was unresponsive for the most part. She continued to get a little worse each day and passed away very early yesterday morning. Her funeral is Wednesday and we've decided to have an indoor service so my son, who is also your Sentimental Stitches web site guru, won't have to try and navigate through the cemetery on crutches.

He slipped on the ice Dec. 23 and broke his leg. Ouch, ouch and Christmas eve at the Urgent Care Center is not how he wanted to spend his holiday.

I apologize to the new Sentimental Stitcher members. So many of the patterns, books and history information I had ready to upload had to be set aside. I will make it up to those of you who signed up early and the two block of the month quilts will start this month - just a bit late.

My nephew's want a heart shaped pillow for my Mom and I need to finish that yet tonight so we can take it to the florist in the morning for flowers. Pink roses is what the boys said. I'll try to remember to get a picture for you. I used some vintage off-white satin and embroidered antique lace. If I can keep my eyes open long enough I'm going to embroider each of the grandchildren's names on satin ribbon for the bow.

You can get started on the block and I'll fill you in on it's hidden stitches shortly.
