Cheddarback Block of the Month – Month 9

Hi Everyone! I hope your November is off to a great start. Mine is very busy so this is going to be a short post.

This is a month where we have a large block and a couple of alphabet blocks. Because the layout for the quilt includes 4 small blocks I've included a couple of bonus blocks this month for you to use. You can use any 5" block you'd like.

If you haven't purchased the Alphabet pattern you can find it - HERE

Block 37

I saw this block and was so excited. I love pink and brown together and this one looked like a little quilt all on it's own.

The prints are wonderful and the construction is amazing. Look at how great those pink stripes line up!! And that brown stripe around the outside corner!!

At first glance the construction looks pretty simple and I was going to present it as it is in the antique quilt but about half way through I decided to start over because I thought I was going to go crazy. I'll tell you what I changed and you can decide for yourself if you want to match the original or take my easy way out.

Look closely at the corners where the narrow dark brown stripe is - those perfectly matched stripes hide  mitered corners. That alone is not such a big deal but the dark brown strip doesn't go all the way around the block so how in the world are we going to put that in there and avoid partial seams on top of the mitered corners. I didn't see a way out of that quagmire so the corners are not mitered and the narrow strips on the sides are pieced so you can get everything together with full seams. I'll admit, I haven't tested the pattern but have gone over it umpteen times and believe it works.

Block 37

Here's one of the optional blocks. It's a classic Log Cabin block you can foundation paper piece and it'll look great in the quilt.

Block 38

Another easy, peasy block but select a great print and it works!

That's it for today. I'm heading off to Shipshewana on Sunday afternoon to get ready for Bonnie Hunter to arrive at the Shipshewana Quilt Retreat on Wednesday. There will be lots of laughs and flying needles next week in Shipshe! The April 2020 retreat is sold out but there's still room in the February, Pajama Sale Retreat. You get the bonus of attending the amazing Pajama Day Sale taking place through the entire town. It's something you have to experience to appreciate.
