    Hi Gayle,

I can’t seem to find the pattern of the first block, can you help me? (I love this quilt and I would love to make it, but first I want to finish my version of “Sally Post”).
    Thank you!

I can’t wait for these either! I have been collecting polka dot fabric for quite a while. I recently ran across an article somewhere (can’t remember exactly where at the moment!), but it told the history of polka dots and why they are called “polka” dots. The article said that the name originated from the dance. The “polka” dance is a happy dance that makes people feel good. During the Great Depression, people began adopting the name “polka” to describe different things, including polka “dots” on fabric! How fortunate we are that we still have “polka dots” around to put a smile on our face! If I can remember where I read the article, I will give reference in another post to the author…Thank you so much for all of the wonderful patterns that you have so freely shared with us. I shall wait anxiously, for your next post!

This is a fantastic quilt, waiting patiently for you to post the first block.
I’ve always wanted to make an applique quilt like this, with lots of leaves and berries. Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to research the colors, estimate the yardages, and draw the blocks for us.

I posted an email to you last fall[2008] that I was collecting polka dot fabrics all the way up the west coast from california to canada in anticipation of this project and am more than disappointed that you don’t read or answer your e-mails as you could have corrected me before I started the trip![after all "polka dot garden" suggests, that the project will be just that, polka dots!!!!]. I have waited a year for this project to begin only to find out that it has nothing to do with polka dots at all!!….I would like to know what the title[Polka Dot Garden] has to do with applique? and why we were mislead in this way? I am deeply disappointed. I bought over $150 worth of polka dots in FQ’s only to find out now that I have wasted my time and money which has turned the pleasure of collecting them and keeping them in tack this long into a sad experience because I passed up many lovely fabrics on my trip in order to collect these. Not everyone likes applique Gayle!! facts be known, I hate it!! You mislead us and I would like to know why?

    Good morning,
I just found your site this morning, when I googled a search for backbasting. Your explanation and pictures are awesome!

I also looked around at your applique patterns, and I love your creations. I wanted to ask if you are using the backbasting on all of your applique, or do you mix it up with regular needle turn for certain items and backbasting of others?

Joan – the patterns are at the top of the page – you need to click on the title below the photo. The first three blocks are now retired so only the fourth is active.

  83. on 17 Jan 2010 at 1:34 pm betty grant

I’ve found block 4 but it is not printing properly. It prints for a couple of inches and then skips several inches and prints another inch and repeats the skip. Obviously I’ve quite computer illiterate but maybe I can find out if it is my printer or the pattern. I’ll keep trying.
Can’t imagine how generous you are with the wonderful patterns. I’m still trying to find appropriate fabrics for Sally Post. Any suggestions? Did you use repro fabrics?

    Michele and Joan,

Photo of quilt was in past posts. I’ve not taken the time to find it to direct you, but it is there, and a partial is in the heading of these posts.

On this particular pattern the past blocks are removed when a new one is up, but I believe are available to purchase from Gayle. Block 4 is currently up.
Just click on the underlined lettering below the picture of the block.

THANK YOU GAYLE for the new block!

  97. [...] night I kept looking at the two block pictures I uploaded for this month’s Beyond The Cherry Trees block and darn it all, there were hidden stitches staring me right in the face. It looked like a [...]

  98. [...] This breath of spring block now has a few more layers, some hidden stitches found and a cute cheddar bird but I think it’s complete. Here’s the center flower with the additional layer outline stitched and the tiny bird. It turns out the two flowers on the sides of the block are not the same as I first thought. This is the one on the right with the additional bottom layer of green outline stitched. I was really excited when I took out the magnifying glass to look more closely at the flower on the left. The tiny brown pieces of fuzz looked like they might be more of the purple print fabric originally used for the grapes but I’m not sure. I did some reverse stitching on one of the flowers to take a look at what might be left of the fabric underneath. It doesn’t appear to have any print design on it. The fabric seems to match up to the worn away fabric in another block that was used for leaves and stems so I think it’s pretty safe to assume the lower layers were green. I think I’ll decide on a fabric for the center of the lower left flower when I get to it. If purple looks good – I’ll use it. If not, I’ll go with the green. You can download the revised block – HERE [...]

Somehow I missed Block Five. I can’t tell from your store whether or not that’s a physical pattern or a download.

Can anybody help me with that? I’d love to put it in my computer files with Blocks 1 – 4 and 6.

    Thanks. :)

  101. on 05 Apr 2010 at 12:17 pm Ellen

Could you share a little information about the cheddar, yellow and beige colors used in this quilt? I’m having a hard time figuring out what they should be. Everyone I’ve asked at my local quilt shops are just guessing what they should be for this time period. In the photos on the blog sometimes they appear lemon and bright, other times soft and more of a butter yellow. I would love some help. This has become my favorite quilt and I’m enjoying it as it developes from block to block. Thank you so much for sharing it.

    DeAnna,
The blocks you purchase in the online store are printed patterns you receive in the mail.

You need to clean up the website. “Free patterns” are not free, but directs me to a purchase site.
Other “monthly” patterns have not been updated and are not advertised as no longer available.
    What gives? CLM

Thanks for Block 9. I decided to make my bird in the middle from plain white fabric, now it looks like a dove against my ecru background. Shows up perfectly.

    Hi Gayle,
I have been following this beautiful quilt and love every moment of it! Thank you so much for being so generous and posting each block. Is there somewhere I can see an outline design of the quilt or even a photo of the whole quilt?

    cheerio, Kirsten :)

    Hi Kirsten,
Try clicking on the green letters for March 2nd, 2010 saying Sentimental Stitches >> Blog Archive >> Countdown to Beyond the Cherry Trees Quilt Block 6. I found a picture Gayle posted of the whole quilt. Judy

Did I miss the June block? I was gone for a couple of weeks, and I can’t find #10.

Anyone know how to set up a site where we could all post our progress on the Cherry Tree blocks? I would love to see what everyone is doing with their blocks and how they are interpeting the patterns to fit their personalities.

Faye, I was going to tell you I’m following someones blog as they do theirs, then I realized it was you ;-)
If I see anyone else doing these, I’ll let you know.

LOL Sharon! I was thinking more in terms of one place where we could ALL post our pictures of our blocks as we go along. Wouldn’t that be fun?

I’ve been waiting for block 11 and 12 to be posted but haven’t seen any more since block 10 in June. Am I missing them somehow?

  118. on 06 Aug 2010 at 5:03 pm Faye

Edna, block #11 should be posted by the 10th of August. Each block comes around the 10th and July was #10.

    Hi Faye,

Thanks so much for offering these free BOM patterns…I have not started my blocks yet… I would like to suggest posting them on Flickr, everyone can upload their photos. Even if you don’t have a blog like myself… what do you think?
