Hi Gayle,
I can’t seem to find the pattern of the first block, can you help me? (I love this quilt and I would love to make it, but first I want to finish my version of “Sally Post”).
Thank you!

I collected the polka dot fabric over the last year and am pleased that you are ready to begin! Am I missing something? I can’t seem to find the september block? OR is this page a pre curser of what is to come? I am soooo ready to start something new!! Penny
it’s so wonderful, i am very exited and impatient to see the first pattern and to quilt it – thank you very much !
I can’t wait for these either! I have been collecting polka dot fabric for quite a while. I recently ran across an article somewhere (can’t remember exactly where at the moment!), but it told the history of polka dots and why they are called “polka” dots. The article said that the name originated from the dance. The “polka” dance is a happy dance that makes people feel good. During the Great Depression, people began adopting the name “polka” to describe different things, including polka “dots” on fabric! How fortunate we are that we still have “polka dots” around to put a smile on our face! If I can remember where I read the article, I will give reference in another post to the author…Thank you so much for all of the wonderful patterns that you have so freely shared with us. I shall wait anxiously, for your next post!
Gay, am I right that since you posted about this long-awaited series, that the first block will be posted OCTOBER 10th??? Because I can’t find it,either
I’m glad to see you back and posting again. I hope all is going well for you now.
Best regards, Gerda

Hi Gay,
This is a fantastic quilt, waiting patiently for you to post the first block.
I’ve always wanted to make an applique quilt like this, with lots of leaves and berries. Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to research the colors, estimate the yardages, and draw the blocks for us.

Thanks for sharing your talents and wonderful work!
Thanks for this lovely quilt Gayle…I’ve printed out my pattern and am trying to decide if I’m going to do wool applique or hook some of the blocks…
Lexie, you have to click first on Fabric Requirements and download those. Then click on the Block 1 under the photo of the block for the block download. I had to try twice before it came up, so try again.

Hi Gayle,
I’m so excited to start, but when I download the pattern blocks the page 1 and page 2 are EMPTY…no pattern on there just the bits at the bottom! I can see page 3 and 4 with no trouble.
I did get the fabric requirements page perfect, and I tried the block page about 4 times but still no page one and two pattern drawing? Help?
judy
Okay call me totally weird…but they printed out just fine! They still don’t show on my screen, but they print perfectly. Thanks a ton!

Love this pattern, thanks so much for sharing. I came over to this blog via Quilting with Ragdolls.
What a treat!
I posted an email to you last fall[2008] that I was collecting polka dot fabrics all the way up the west coast from california to canada in anticipation of this project and am more than disappointed that you don’t read or answer your e-mails as you could have corrected me before I started the trip![after all "polka dot garden" suggests, that the project will be just that, polka dots!!!!]. I have waited a year for this project to begin only to find out that it has nothing to do with polka dots at all!!….I would like to know what the title[Polka Dot Garden] has to do with applique? and why we were mislead in this way? I am deeply disappointed. I bought over $150 worth of polka dots in FQ’s only to find out now that I have wasted my time and money which has turned the pleasure of collecting them and keeping them in tack this long into a sad experience because I passed up many lovely fabrics on my trip in order to collect these. Not everyone likes applique Gayle!! facts be known, I hate it!! You mislead us and I would like to know why?
Gayle,
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful project! I am in love with antique quilts, particularly album quilts, and can’t wait to get started!
Gayle,
Thank you for the beautiful patterns and time that you freely give to us.I love all of the applique patterns on the site.So much applique and so little time.Sally Post,Magic Vine,Beyond The Cherry Trees, all wonderful old applique quilts. It’s nice that someone can get the antique quilt patterns to us ,so that we can reproduce them.Thank you again.Valinda
I can’t seem to find the block for Beyond the Cherry Trees.
I am unable to find block #2. I understood they would be posted by the 10th of each month.
I, too, came in search of the next block. I thought that I might have missed the October block, but now that it is mid-November, I’d expect to see something new by now. Perhaps something has happened to our benefactor? I hope all turns out well for her.
I really hate to complain when someone gives me something, but are we going to finish this? I would love to do this quilt, but I don’t want it to turn out like my midget blocks. It has been several months since we have had a new block. Is there something we could do to help?

I friend recommended this site to me a week ago, and I am so thrilled she did! A big thank you for drafting these blocks. I am a sucker for antique American applique quilts -so of course I had to start this. Block 1 is done, block 2 starts tonight! Again, many thanks from Down Under!
Wow, applique, my love for handwork. These are gorgeous. I hope someone reminds me about this each month.

Good morning,
I just found your site this morning, when I googled a search for backbasting. Your explanation and pictures are awesome!
I also looked around at your applique patterns, and I love your creations. I wanted to ask if you are using the backbasting on all of your applique, or do you mix it up with regular needle turn for certain items and backbasting of others?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent with us,
Kathy
Thanks a bunch. For sharing your photos of the DJ Retreat as well, for those of us in Australia.

Wow, I am glad I found this site before the first blocks were blocked from download. They are beautiful and I can’t wait to get at them.
can we sign up somewhere so we are notified when a new block comes out? this is beautiful!
I started to collect these patterns and am still working on block 1. I must have missed the third block, is their any way of getting it? Thanks, Melanie
Due to my daughter getting married late last year, I’ve missed the first three blocks of this quilt…could someone send them to me via email…or tell me how to go about getting them? Many thanks, d

Dear Gay,
Where can we see a photo of the entire quilt top. Just thinking about placement, and coordination of colors and fabrics. Thank you.
has anyone found the patterns for
beyond the cherry trees?
thanks
joan hallett
hallett57@aol.com
Joan – the patterns are at the top of the page – you need to click on the title below the photo. The first three blocks are now retired so only the fourth is active.
I’ve found block 4 but it is not printing properly. It prints for a couple of inches and then skips several inches and prints another inch and repeats the skip. Obviously I’ve quite computer illiterate but maybe I can find out if it is my printer or the pattern. I’ll keep trying.
Can’t imagine how generous you are with the wonderful patterns. I’m still trying to find appropriate fabrics for Sally Post. Any suggestions? Did you use repro fabrics?
Life got the best of me over the holidays and I forgot to come in and get blocks 2 and 3 (I have 1 and just printed out 4). How can I get the patterns now for blocks 2 and 3.
Thanks for your help!
Suzanne
Michele and Joan,
Photo of quilt was in past posts. I’ve not taken the time to find it to direct you, but it is there, and a partial is in the heading of these posts.
On this particular pattern the past blocks are removed when a new one is up, but I believe are available to purchase from Gayle. Block 4 is currently up.
Just click on the underlined lettering below the picture of the block.
THANK YOU GAYLE for the new block!
I FOUND THE PICTURE of the quilt “Beyond the Cherry Trees Album Quilt”. If you click on “Fabric Requirements” at the top of this page just above where the blocks are posted you can see a picture of the entire quilt.
thank you sincerely for the help on getting the blocks .
i am going to start this now .
yes i have enough in my stash…hehe

I get a message that the file for block 4 can not be opened.
I know it states that when the patterns are “retired” after a month they can be purchased, and I’m more than happy to purchase the 2nd and 3rd blocks that I missed downloading, but I can find where to purchase them. They don’t appear to be in the online store. Can anyone help me out in getting blocks 2 and 3??!!
Thanks!
Suzanne

[...] This breath of spring block now has a few more layers, some hidden stitches found and a cute cheddar bird but I think it’s complete. Here’s the center flower with the additional layer outline stitched and the tiny bird. It turns out the two flowers on the sides of the block are not the same as I first thought. This is the one on the right with the additional bottom layer of green outline stitched. I was really excited when I took out the magnifying glass to look more closely at the flower on the left. The tiny brown pieces of fuzz looked like they might be more of the purple print fabric originally used for the grapes but I’m not sure. I did some reverse stitching on one of the flowers to take a look at what might be left of the fabric underneath. It doesn’t appear to have any print design on it. The fabric seems to match up to the worn away fabric in another block that was used for leaves and stems so I think it’s pretty safe to assume the lower layers were green. I think I’ll decide on a fabric for the center of the lower left flower when I get to it. If purple looks good – I’ll use it. If not, I’ll go with the green. You can download the revised block – HERE [...]
Congrats on the fabric line, how fun!
Hi!
Somehow I missed Block Five. I can’t tell from your store whether or not that’s a physical pattern or a download.
Can anybody help me with that? I’d love to put it in my computer files with Blocks 1 – 4 and 6.
Thanks.
Could you share a little information about the cheddar, yellow and beige colors used in this quilt? I’m having a hard time figuring out what they should be. Everyone I’ve asked at my local quilt shops are just guessing what they should be for this time period. In the photos on the blog sometimes they appear lemon and bright, other times soft and more of a butter yellow. I would love some help. This has become my favorite quilt and I’m enjoying it as it developes from block to block. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Just wondering about the name, Beyond the Cherry Trees, for this lovely old quilt. Why and where did the name come from? It’s so interesting. I just started making my first block (#7). I’ve been collecting fabric for it for a couple of months now. Thank you so much for sharing the patterns.
DeAnna,
The blocks you purchase in the online store are printed patterns you receive in the mail.

Thanks for Block 9. I decided to make my bird in the middle from plain white fabric, now it looks like a dove against my ecru background. Shows up perfectly.
Hi Gayle,
I have been following this beautiful quilt and love every moment of it! Thank you so much for being so generous and posting each block. Is there somewhere I can see an outline design of the quilt or even a photo of the whole quilt?
cheerio, Kirsten
Hi Kirsten,
Try clicking on the green letters for March 2nd, 2010 saying Sentimental Stitches >> Blog Archive >> Countdown to Beyond the Cherry Trees Quilt Block 6. I found a picture Gayle posted of the whole quilt. Judy
Did I miss the June block? I was gone for a couple of weeks, and I can’t find #10.
#10 just got posted today, July 11, 2010
Anyone know how to set up a site where we could all post our progress on the Cherry Tree blocks? I would love to see what everyone is doing with their blocks and how they are interpeting the patterns to fit their personalities.
Faye, I was going to tell you I’m following someones blog as they do theirs, then I realized it was you
