So Sew Easy Schlep Bag

I hope you like the So Sew Easy Schlep Bag.
I’ve only finished the basic bag instructions and haven’t completed all the testing on the pattern. I’m working on the collection of Twists on the basic pattern and will post those as soon as they are available. I’ll share with you how to make your bag reversible or use strips instead of squares. How to add batting or interfacing for structure and there will be a size chart so you’ll know ahead of time what size bag you’ll have based on the size of your starting pieces. I’ll tell you how to add pockets to the inside or outside, how you can change the handles or shape of the top of the bag. We can add snaps, clips, fobs, embroidery, quilt blocks and……….. The possibilities seem endless so keep checking back as new Twists are posted.

What a great bag to use for my trips to the library. I listen to many books on tape while sewing or quilting and they take up lots of space in a standard tote bag. This will work great. It would be fun to use book and reading related fabrics. Thanks so much.

Once you start making these bags you’re hooked! Last fall I reduced the square size and made Trick-or-Treat bags for my nephews. I also made them smaller bags to carry toys when coming to visit. It was wonderful to see them carrying their little bags full of treasures. Play around with the square size and the possibilities for using them are endless.

I would like to distribute copies of your schlep bag pattern to students in my quilting class. Is that okay with you? This is a free class offerred through the local community college.

It is an adorable pattern and several of my students have made bags and shared them in class. I won’t make copies of anything without express permission, though.

    Thanks!

I love this bag, and the fact you can make it any size you want. I have made 3 smaller ones and large tote and I gave one for one of my sisters for her b’day and she is crazy over it. I am curtanily working on another large tote for a friend, as she loves it. What a great way to use up scraps… LOVE that idea too. I was to inteminated to even try but a friend shamed me into trying and I am very happy she did.

Thanks for an easy pattern as I am enjoying making them. It is true, once you make one your hooked…

I LOVE this bag. Each one is unique and they go together so quick. The first one I did by hand-piecing and then the next machine piecing. Both were gorgeous. Thanks for sharing it.

I am having trouble making the schlep bag. I’m at the point where it looks like a windmill and can’t figure out how to sew it together. Because of the direction of the triangles being the same on each end, they don’t match up. Is the diagram correct? Can someone please help me? I really want to finish this bag! Thank you!

I made my mother one of these bags with buttons on one side of the handles. This way she can attach it to her wheelchair or walker. She recently took it with her to the hospital to carry her personal items(reading glasses, puzzle books, pens, address book, etc). All the nurses loved it!!

I made two of these with crazy quilt blocks for the focus fabric, and they are wonderful! Only problem is I accidently started with 10″ (instead of 8″)blocks for one of them and came out with a monster bag big enough to carry my 4 year old grandson around.

I sent an email earlier regarding vintage male and female golfer patterns and I think I hit a wrong key for my email address. The email asked if you have or know of any vintage male and/or female golfers that can be done in redwork.

Sorry for any confusion I caused by hitting an incorrect key in my email address.

I volunteer for North Valley Hospital Guild in Tonasket, WA. We are an hour plus, south of Pentiction, BC.

I would like to know if I could have this pattern to use to make these bags for our Winterfest Craft Sale. All of our money goes back into the community for projects for the hospital, nursing home, assisted living and scholarships for those entering the medical field.

I think this project would be a super one for our guild to help raise money.

I have seen the bag and think it is awesome and everyone will want one.

Thanks for your time. Will await your reply.

I love this bag. I have made several but with the top triangle going the opposite direction. I can not make it go together the way it is drawn.

What am I doing wrong… or is the picture wrong?

When I make it, I make sure the right angle is on the edge of all 4 of the strips that comes out of the center bottom blocks (“C”). I call this the long side of the strip. When I sew the 4 “C” blocks together there becomes an inside and an outside to this grouping. The picture shows the longest side of the strip on the outside of the top and left wings of the windmill only. Am I making any sense?

I have made so many of these bags over the past 6 or 7 years. I have used 2, 4, 6, and 8 inch squares. I also make the lining out of snuggle flannel and also in the squares. You can see some of my bags on my webpage

    Hi,
I had the same problem with the pattern as you. It is very easy to correct. Make sure the triagle’s point the same direction. (all sewn on the same way) Not the way the picture shows it. If you follow the pattern, 2 of them end up backwards, and they don’t sew together. I hope this was helpful, after you play with it, and it goes together the first time, it is easy.
It may help to put in on the floor, and put it into place using your hands first so you get a visual of the way it works.
    Good Luck,
    Happy sewing,
    Angela

I am attempting to make the Schlep Bag. I adore the finished product, but I must be doing something wrong. I have gotten to the part where you sew all the sides together, 1-8, and then unsewn it and did it again, and STILL I can’t get it to come out looking like the illustration. I admit that I am a beginning to intermediate sewer, so can you please tell me what i’m missing? When I get the seams sewn, instead of the patches looking like they are on point, they are just staight across and of course that makes the top of the bag WAY not right also. I really want to make this as thank you gifts for the women in my family at a gathering in a week or so, so any advice would be seriously appreciated. Thank you!

  91. on 06 Sep 2009 at 10:37 pm Lana Laqua

I love this bag. I tried it just with blocks but used 3 fabrics instead of 4. I sewed it wrong so I ripped it out. Now I want to make more and try pieced/quilted blocks. I did make a smaller version (not lined) to test out what I did wrong before I ripped out the first bag and sewed it back together all in one afternoon and evening.

I love this bag so much, I have used the pattern to make halloween trick or treat bags for my kids and now I’m making a bag for my daughter for her karate gear. I added a zipper found a tutorial at:

    http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=11808.0

to add a zipper to a lined bag I got lost with the last couple of steps so did it my way and it works.

I did find the tutorial with pictures! Wow, does that help alot…I made my first bag from the original pattern, it turned out great, but I did more pondering than sewing. ;)
Anyway, for those that haven’t found the pictures with a step by step, tutorial…it’s in the ARCHIVES-JUNE 2009. Those pictures make it so much easier, then winging it with just the instructions. At least for me, I am from the school of “a picture is worth a thousand words”.

    Hi,
Can we distribute your pattern as a freebie at quilt class? It is such a fun bag but want to have permission of course. We would not be charging for the pattern.
    Thanks
