Just Takes 2â„¢ Benjamin Biggs Quilt Blocks 24 and 25 – The Final Blocks

Advertisements:

I don't know about you but I'm just about knee deep in holiday preparations and it's only December 1st. The month of November flew by without my realizing it.

IMG_4901[1] Maybe that's because I was sick with a flu bug when the month started and then traveled to Mary Koval's Quilt Shop in Bedford, Pennsylvania.

IMG_4796[1]I was able to attend 4 classes with the wonderful Di Ford Hall. There was also a beautiful luncheon in Di's honor at the Bedford Springs Resort and we were enjoyed Di's lecture in the evening. It was a whirlwind of activity. I saw some old friend and made some new ones too. You really can't ask for more.
IMG_4972[1] She is such a wonderful teacher with a wealth of information she willingly shares with her students. Di, Mary and her staff all worked very hard to make this event extra special. Thank you ladies!

IMG_5096[1]From Pennsylvania it was on to Shipshewana, Indiana for the Just Takes 2 Quilt Retreat.

IMG_5086[1]Ann Holte was our teacher this fall. She taught classes and presented a lecture on the fantastic Lancaster Diamonds quilt. There is much to be learned about this unique quilt, it's family connection to "sister quilts" and she shared some great construction techniques.

Di Ford Hall and Linda Collins

Next fall's retreat will begin two years of international teaching by these two lovely ladies. In 2016, the amazing Linda Collins from Quilts in the Barn will focus on perfect machine piecing without pressing! I've seen her work and you won't want to miss attending her first U.S. classes. In the fall of 2017, Di Ford Hall will join us to focus on her exquisite applique and broderie perse techniques. Di is working on a new book and has two more fabric collections coming out soon. Check the retreat web site for the dates, mark your calendars and be sure you've signed up for the Sentimental Stitches newsletter so you'll know when registration opens for these events. There's a link in the sidebar to sign up for the newsletter.
Registration is now open for the April 2016 retreat and we look forward to seeing you again! Shipshewana is beautiful in the spring time.

Now for today's important business. It's the final installment of the Benjamin Biggs quilt. You're getting both Block 24 and Block 25 today.
Benjamin Biggs Block 24

Block 24

I think this is one of my favorite blocks in the quilt. I just love all the leaves on the curved branches. The only information I found on the block maker was that she was born in 1827. The 1850 census shows her living with Benjamin Tayman, a farmer in Washington, DC. I believe they moved there from Maryland where they were born.

You now have everything you'll need to complete the Just Takes 2 Benjamin Biggs quilt! The blocks I've seen so far are wonderful and I can't wait to see some completed quilts. If you've missed any of the blocks along the way you can order them HERE.

There WON'T be a Just Takes 2â„¢ Block of the Month for 2016

Thank you for your support over the last four years. We hope you've enjoyed the quilts presented and will continue to visit Sentimental Stitches and Dear Jane to see what's happening.

ss logo 2015 Sentimental Stitchesâ„¢ is celebrating it's 20th anniversary in 2016. I have so many wonderful things planned to share with you that I need to go over the list and narrow it down to what I think we can manage even if we celebrate for 20 months! It's also the 10th anniversary for the web site and I want to be sure to honor and thank all of you who have followed me through the years. I'll be back in a day or two..........or maybe three to share with you some of what's going to take place. I have to save a few surprises!

Just Takes 2â„¢ Benjamin Biggs Quilt Block 23

Advertisements:

Here we are down to the final three blocks in the Benjamin Biggs quilt. I haven't had much time to put together information on this block. I've been fighting a nasty cold bug for at least the last week. It's really taken the stuffing out of me so today's post is going to be short.

Benjamin Biggs Block 23

Block 23

The block is an interesting one. Looks a little like apple branches to me which are perfect for this time of year. There are two red fabrics and two greens ones so a little bit of everything tossed in. I can't wait to see what you do.

Jane was 25 years old when she made this block and the 1850 census shows her still living in Frederick County, Maryland with Robert Fleming, age 65, a farmer I assume was her father and her younger brother Robert.

Paula Barnes - Marcus Brothers FabricsBefore you head over to Brenda's to download your block I have a favor to ask. A friend is desperately looking for some of this fabric. It's by Paula Barnes for Marcus Brothers Fabrics and probably a couple of years old. Blue and dark gray (almost black) on cream shirting type print. If you know where to find some or have this in your stash and would be willing to part with it I'd be ever so grateful. I've looked everywhere I can think of, spending way more than a few hours online with no luck so far. Just email or leave me a comment. I can put it on the Missing Fabrics page too

Cabot Cuties II and Starlight-Starbright!

They're here - they're finally here! Two new $5 Block of the Month quilts! I've been getting emails requesting more Cabot Cuties blocks for months and think you're going to love this new quilt!

Cabot Cuties II

The love affair with the Cabot Cuties continues with Cabot Cuties II. Nancy Cabot was a fictional designer whose quilt blocks appeared in weekly newspaper columns during the 1930s. The Cabot Cuties II quilt is based from the hundreds of vintage designs I’ve collected. You’ll receive patterns for five or six 4 1/2” blocks each month during the program along with finishing instructions for the 66” x 72” quilt using all 80 blocks.

IMG_4340[1]There are all kinds of blocks - machine pieced, hand pieced and foundation paper pieced. Each pattern uses the easiest method of construction. I haven't decided if I'll use the indigo and cheddar setting for my blocks or keep it more classic and use a shirting print.

This next quilt I've been saving for a while. It's no secret that I'm in love with star blocks so here's a great mix of blocks and techniques to make the perfect galaxy of stars stitched with either light or bright stars.

Red and white, blue and white…..cheddar and white! I’m excited to offer this fun quilt as one of the $5 Block of the Month projects. I’m making the Starlight version of the quilt in red and white and using cuddle fabric for the backing so I’ll have a warm and cozy lap size quilt to use during the holidays.
Starbright IndigoI'm also making the Starbright colorway with some of my treasured indigo prints against a white background.

IMG_4338[1]Whatever fabrics you choose I know you’ll have fun making this great quilt. You’ll receive patterns for two blocks each month for 15 months along with the pieced border and finishing instructions. As always, I'll use the easiest method of construction for the blocks.

I really appreciate you patience in waiting for the new $5 Block of the Month quilts. I don't have as much design time as I used to and it takes me a lot longer to get new things ready but I'm still chipping away at my list. I'm really thrilled to share these new quilts with you!
