Nancy Page – Magic Vine

Nancy Page Club Magic Vine Quilt

This is one of my favorite applique quilt designs. It appeared in newspapers around the country beginning in 1931. The flower vines are constructed block by block which makes them easier to applique. While the original series was a weekly project, I’ll be posting the blocks monthly. Next month I’ll post the border design so you can work on those strips while making the blocks. The finished quilt will measure 90″ x 108″ if you add all of the suggested borders. You’ll receive the quilt layout in the Beginning of the Quilt pattern.
I suggest purchasing a minimum of 8 yards for your background fabric. I’m using two shades of green as suggested and recommend purchasing 2 yards of each color. The rest of the fabrics you can probably pull from your scrap basket.

I saw the Magic Vine Quilt over a year ago on a television quilting program, have had my eyes open for the pattern and directions since, what a wonderful surprise just now to find it. I immediately copied block 1, put the site in my “favorite places” and next month will be one of the first to look for the next block…..I have a smile on my face!! Martha

I was wondering if you cut the background into 6 1/2” sections for the Block 2–Leaf Pattern, or do you do it in a single 6 1/2” wide strip? Is there a scheduled day when the new block will be posted each month? Carol

Thank you so much for the Magic Vine pattern. I’ve been collecting patterns for years – esp. the old ones & have been hunting for this one!

  18. on 30 Mar 2007 at 8:05 pm Karen

I just found this with a Google search. How fortunate for me. I am in the process of starting the Qrandmother’s Garden Quilt. The fabrics are no longer available, however, I think I can use these in place of the striped fabric. If not, think of the fun just creating this. Thank you for re-creating this.

I just got home from a retreat in Shipshewana, IN. We were in Rebecca Haarer’s shop and she had 6 of the strips we are working on right now of the Magic Vine for sale at $25 each. They are very old and I think they must be from the original pattern and time (1930’s). It was nice to see the original patterns, but I am enjoying the 30’s repros I am using on the new fabrics!

My mother made me a Magic Vine quilt more than 50 years ago and I would like to make one for my daughter. I have my mother’s sketches and templates for the flowers but need the size of the flower and leaf blocks and suggestions for quilting. I have been unable to download or find the pattern on your online store. Please help. Thanks.

  41. on 04 Apr 2008 at 9:55 am Phyllis

I am so loving this BOM. I am way way behind on blocks, but will have the nicest booklet when this is all finished! Ruth, if you check out the “Beginning the Quilt” at the very top of the page, I believe it may give you the information you need. Good luck.

  42. on 10 Apr 2008 at 9:29 am Emmy

Ruth, I just received the ” Nancy’s Notions” catalog and the fabrics are in there. You may also want to check Eleanor Burns’ website: http://www.quiltinaday.com/shoponline/fabric.asp
I did just look there and it said they were currently out, but they will be getting more in. I hope this is a help. God bless, Emmy

I am missing block 15 somehow. and it’s not listed above. Did I miss something somewhere?

    Lori

  44. on 06 May 2008 at 4:59 am Janet Parde

Lori, I have to scroll the page side-ways to access some of the blocks. It’s like they are hidden under the listings on the right side of the page. I found 15 that way. Now I am missing 17. I hope that it shows up, eventually! I made the first 9 for a gift for someone. They turned out wonderfully! Thanks so much to Gayle. Janet P.

  46. on 17 May 2008 at 7:45 am Deanna Ahern

Thanks so very much for providing these great patterns! I am prepping the blocks to take with me to our summer home, so that I don’t have to take tons of fabric. Is block 18 Zinnia the last one?

    Thanks again,
    Deanna

I have an unfinished Magic Vine quilt that my grandmother started. The vines with flowers are complete. The border with vine only needs to be made. I’m hoping the green fabric in the box will be enough. Has the border design ever been posted? It looks like it should have been in Nov. 2006. Does anyone have it?

    Thanks for your help.

  48. on 19 May 2008 at 11:26 am Deanna Ahern

I think the leaf pattern for the border is also on Block #2.

  49. on 27 May 2008 at 9:36 pm Emmy

Barbara, If you go up under “View” way at the top of the screen, click on that and scroll down to “make text bigger” or “make text smaller” and click on latter. I think all the numbers will show up for you. If that doesn’t work click on the other one. I have had that happen to me too and this will help. God bless Emmy

  55. on 02 Oct 2008 at 6:15 am Becky Coleman

Thank you for posting these blocks. I had a few newspaper clippings of the blocks that I got at an estate sale many years ago. I’m thrilled to have the whole quilt, and I now have some time to work on it.

  56. on 04 Oct 2008 at 7:39 am Wanetha

Thank You Gayle! This has been a WHIMM of mine for sometime. Now I can get serious about it.

I’m still looking for just the right color of green. I’ve narrowed it down to one of the Kona Cotton greens. I love the vintage color palet, but I think I am going to use a soft tone on tone for the background just to give it a modern twist. Another kit to get together and work on it as it pleases me.

Have all the patterns printed off and love reading the leadin on each.

Isn’t quilting fun!!! The planning and dreaming is a big part of it for me, cause I know there is no way I am going to live to be 500 years old. LOL
