1857 Album Quilt – Blocks 32 – 33 – 34 – 35

I'm sorry to be late this month with my post for the 1857 Album Quilt blocks. After watching my granddaughter three days a week and taking care of Sentimental Stitches there isn't much time for me to do any stitching. I wasn't feeling like much of a quilter and had to put fabric, needle and thread together to renew my spirit.

I wanted to make a quilt, valances and Minnie Mouse sheets for Violet's new big girl bedroom.

A quilt for her to snuggle up with on the couch this fall and winter when it gets cold.

At least two quilts for her little brother arriving in a couple of weeks and a quilt (it's a surprise) for someone I felt needs something special to remind them how much they're loved sooooooo I took some time to get those things finished or at least off to the machine quilter. Needless to say, when I take time to do that everything else kind of comes to a screeching halt.

I have four blocks for you today so let's get started -

I didn't have the quilt or this picture with me when I was drafting the block so my embroidery design for the basket doesn't match the original quilt - insert my sad face 🙁

This block was made my M Gowdey. I feel she was quite an affluent quilter as she had a stamp made to use on the album blocks she made for quilts. Most basket blocks of this style are pieced but this one is appliqued in two pieces. It was adorned with black thread embroidery on the basket, base and handle making it a more complex block than it seems at first glance.

This block was made by Anna Kerrington (or Kenington) and is your easy block for this month. I like the sweet little chainstitch embroidery details Anna added to the stem and leaves of her block.

Laura's mother, Hannah Ackerman

Now for something special!!! One of our fellow quilters, Niki Armacost has done some fantastic research on Laura and her family. I decided it deserved it's very own page on the web site so you could refer to it whenever you want. Not only did Niki find volumes of information on the Ackerman family, their relatives and friends but she was able to find a direct link between the 1857 Album Quilt and the Houseman Quilt. I encourage you to get yourself a cup of coffee or tea and spend some time going over the Genealogy page. It will bring a whole new meaning to the quilt and probably leave you with some of the same questions I have. One of them, how in the world did a quilt of this significance end up in my care?!?!
I don't know how to thank Niki for all her time and hard work in finding the historical documents she did. I would never have been able to do what she has done. Niki, your contributions to the history of the quilt are amazing and there aren't words to express my gratitude to you for all you've done.

1857 Album Quilt – Blocks 29 – 30 – 31

For me, September signals the start of the fall season. The children all go back to school, the weather begins to cool and the leaves start changing colors. It's a beautiful time of year and it usually allows my life to slow down a little but I don't think that's going to happen this year. I've been working on baby quilts for my new grandson due to arrive in October along with curtains and quilts for Violet's new bedroom. I'm sorry I've been such an absent leader over the summer.

Sentimental Stitches Phone Case 2 The winner of last month's 20th anniversary prize is .............Donna W.

Holiday Wishes This month's anniversary prize is a copy of the book, Holiday Wishes. There are 12 Christmas projects inside including the cover block of the month quilt. Leave a comment on this post before the 20th of the month and I'll draw a name for the winner.

The block is signed by John H. Stephens and is one of my favorite blocks. I think you'll have fun making all the circles in various sizes to put together your cluster of grapes. The embroidery on the block is mostly worn away but the delicate buttonhole stitching around the little oval at the stop of the stem is adorable. I'm going to use an outline stitch for the embroidery on the stem and leaves.

Block 30

This is not one of my favorite blocks but it had special meaning to the quilter who stitched it.

The block is signed in tiny cross stitch - C. A.
It's one of the larger designs in the quilt and I had to put the little flower from the top of the stem down in the lower right hand corner of the pattern so it would all fit on one page.

Block 31

This is one of the sweetest blocks in the entire quilt. It was most likely cut as you would a paper snowflake.

It too is signed in tiny cross stitch by Aunt Nettie. This is a perfect block to try your hand at back basting if you've never tried the technique.

I haven't forgotten I still owe everyone a tutorial for putting together the rings on Block 28. Rob and I should have a quiet holiday weekend at the cottage so I'll try to put that together for you while I'm there........after I finish the applique on the baby quilt and the borders on Violet's toddler bed quilt.

I have some really interesting historical information on Laura and her family I hope to be able to share soon but am waiting on permission to do that so I guess that's it for today. Please keep sharing your progress in the 1857 Album Quilt Facebook Group. There are some stunning quilts being made and I love seeing each and every one. There's a wealth of quilting talent in the group too if you have questions or want technique suggestions when working on your blocks.

1857 Album Quilt – Blocks 25 – 26 – 27 – 28

Hello August - how did you get here so fast. In Michigan we've had several hot, humid days when all I feel like doing is lounging in the water or running through the sprinkler with Violet. That means there isn't enough time to do everything I want to do but I'm making progress. I'm now only 3 blocks behind on my applique! I'm not worried because once the leaves change colors and the cold weather rolls in I'll have plenty of time to catch up.

I had to be careful this month when selecting blocks because I always want to do my "favorites" and there are some "what were they thinking" blocks we need to tackle too. I've tried to give you a mix of those this month and some are easy, some will take more time.

1857 quilt block 25

Block 25

This block isn't one of my favorites but it's growing on me as I've researched it's meaning. The embroidery has partially worn away but I could still make out the lettering which reads: "Touch not - Taste not". Are you scratching your head in wonder? I sure was but have learned with antique friendship quilts if something is written on a block it's usually one of the two S's - Sentiment or Scripture. In this case it's scripture! Colossians 2:21 from the King James Version of the Bible to be exact. If you look at the 2nd chapter of Colossians in it's entirety it talks about staying close to Christ and away from worldly things as you live your life.

1857 album quilt block 25 The block was made by Helen.

I think she was concerned about Laura leaving her family in Wisconsin to go live New York as a new bride with all the worldly temptations that would surely come her way in such a big city.

1857 album quilt block 25
1857 album quilt block 25 Even though it's an unusual block I think it would be pretty using a larger scale print for the two bottles with solid color goblets in the center.

Block 26

IMG_7776

IMG_7774 Isn't this a pretty block? I love the delicate stems that were once embroidered. There are delicate little curls on top of the rosebuds.

IMG_7772I've looked at this inked signature every way I can think of and can't figure out who signed the block.

IMG_7777

A second color green was used for part of the stem.

IMG_7769a

Block 27

IMG_7770This simple block is another place where a medium to large scale print would be perfect for your fabric choice. You can see in what remains of the fabric that it was originally a floral.

IMG_7771The block is simply signed - Magy (or was it Magg?)

IMG_7779a

Block 28

IMG_7780The block was made by Maria Brink.

It was nice to have a name to research but I can only make a guess as to who our Maria is. I couldn't find anyone named Maria Brink living in Wisconsin where Laura was from and found only one Maria Brink living in New York during that time period. She was born around 1817 but I didn't see any direct family relationship to Laura or Alfred so I can't be sure.

IMG_7781 What a great design of interlocking circles! There's a little donut shape on the pattern so you can cut all the shapes, make a slit in each one and weave them over and under. I think this is the easiest way to make this work. Just remember, you have green rings and 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and red ones at 3 and 9. Start by positioning those and work in the two rings between 12 - 3 - 6 - 9 and back to 12.

IMG_7491 The winner of last month's anniversary prize is Laurie! Congratulations! I'll email you to get your delivery information.

Sentimental Stitches Phone Case 2 I designed this phone case several years ago and people stop me all the time to ask where I bought it.

Sentimental Stitches Phone Case It's been one of my favorites and I thought it would be a great anniversary gift. Leave a comment on this post before the 20th of the August and I'll use Random.org to select the winner.
