Dream Garden Quilt – Block 5

Advertisements:

It's with a very heavy heart that I'm posting this month's block. I attended the funeral yesterday of a long time friend and quilter, Barb David. We met many years ago when she signed up for one of the quilting classes I was teaching. Over the years she became one of my biggest supporters and a great friend. I think she signed up for every class I offered and eventually the student became the teacher and she shared her talents with countless quilters, encouraging them and teaching new techniques too. She loved all kinds of handwork, applique, embroidery and Twilling, a unique, beautiful type of hand embroidery. She made more quilts than I'd dare to count and shared them with family, friends and many charities. Four of her quilts were at the funeral. I don't know who selected the quilts or why they chose the ones they did but when I looked at them I couldn't believe my eyes. Hopefully they didn't hear me gasp when I saw them.

Magic Vine full
On the wall to the right was a beautiful crib size quilt made from the Nancy Page Club Magic Vine patterns.

In Love With Applique -c
On the table just to the left of that was a beautifully made little quilt from my In Love with Applique pattern.

3555 Formal Garden To the left was Barb's perfectly hand appliqued, embroidered and quilted Formal Garden quilt made from a two day workshop I did several years ago. Formal Garden was the most popular of the F.A. Wurzburg kit quilts. We held the workshop in one of the Wurburg family homes here in Grand Rapids. Barb's kit was one of only 50 kits we were able to stamp on fabric from the original master pattern. She did a stunning job on her quilt.

Now if all that weren't enough, the Baltimore Album quilt folded across the casket was made from a class I taught at Smith-Owen Sewing Center when I first started teaching many years ago. We all bought a collection of special P&B tone on tone prints for our quilts and a collection of cotton thread for applique. Barb's quilt was nothing less than perfection and a testament to her skill and love of quiltmaking. For me seeing those quilts .........I just don't think I can find the words to express all the emotions I feel. I am humbled and honored to have been part of the life of such a great lady to say the least.

Barb had battled cancer for 18 years and endured countless surgeries and procedures. She handled it all with a graceful spirit I aspire to have. Shortly after the Dream Garden quilt started in January she found out her cancer was back again and this time the news wasn't good. Barb had told another friend how much she loved this quilt but knew she'd never be able to finish it. Thankfully my friend shared the story with me. If you're one of the quilters who went ahead and bought the complete set you already know what the back of the pattern says -

This pattern is dedicated to my friend Barb David who is an inspiration to all who know her for her beautiful quilting, loving heart, gentle spirit and unwavering courage.
June 6, 1942—May 11, 2014

I sadly added the dates to the end of the dedication today. It was a bit comforting to see Barb with her unfinished embroidery in her hands and I truly believe she's teaching the angels Twilling and Redwork - helping them get perfect stitches.

Goodbye dear friend. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten!

You can get today's block on the Dream Garden page - HERE

News! News! Have I Got News!

Advertisements:

I've come to the conclusion that 2014 is the year I'll spend chasing myself trying to keep up with all the wonderful things happening. Who knows why everything seems to happen at once but this is my year for that. At least they're all good things and lots of them I can share with you so you can be part of the fun!

2012 Just Takes 2™ Quilt
Some pretty great Just Takes 2 news was shared on Facebook last night! Barbara Black's 2012 Just Takes 2 quilt will be the feature quilt for the 40th Anniversary International Quilt Festival in Houston this fall. Brenda and I are truly honored to be part of what will be a spectacular event! If you've ever thought about attending the show, this is the year to go! I've been to all the major quilt shows and the Houston Festival is by far the biggest and best I've ever attended. It's the only show I think about returning to year after year. They're pulling out all the stops and it's something you won't want to miss. Barb's Just Takes 2 quilt will be everywhere and I mean everywhere! The Ruby Jubilee exhibit is going to be fantastic. It might be the biggest collection of red and white quilts to be exhibited since the Infinite Variety exhibit in New York that inspired Just Takes2™! If you have a red and white quilt you'd like to share they've extended the deadline to enter quilts until May 31st. I have a quilt or two I might submit! If all that's not enough to tempt you, Brenda and I will be at the show! Karey Bresenhan graciously offered us the opportunity to have a booth at Festival and we'll have it filled with lots of wonderful things. We'd love to have you stop by to say hello. If you'd like to start your own 2012 Just Takes 2™ quilt you can order the patterns - HERE.

I know I usually talk about Sentimental Stitches here but if you know me at all you know that my family is the most important thing in the world to me. I love them like crazy and keep them close even if sometimes it's only in my heart.

May 2014

That's our son Paul on the right - Check out their shirts and what they say!

I'M GOING TO BE A GRANDMA!

The kids put this picture on Facebook last week so I guess it's okay for me to share the news. Yes, we're excited beyond belief but guess what else?? That first grandchild is due to be born the day after Festival ends! No stress there for this grandma! I just know the good Lord will have that baby either come early, late or find a way for me to fly home during Festival so I don't miss a minute of something as wonderful as this. Congratulations Paul and Angela!
None of you are surprised when I tell you I have baby's first quilt already underway are you?

Indigo Spice Stars I just love this quilt! It's one of our "cottage quilts". I made it years ago and we use it every year. I've often thought about sharing the patterns for all of the cottage quilts with you and selected this one to be the first pattern in a new section of the online store. It's called Indigo Spice Stars and you'll find it in the Dollar Downloads! You might find an entire quilt pattern in that part of the store or maybe just a block or two. It might be patchwork, applique, embroidery or a little of all three. One thing you can always count on - it will only cost $1.00!

Paul and Kevin Sunday is Mother's Day and I want to wish all the Moms a very Happy Mother's Day. To celebrate I put all the digital patterns on sale. If you use the discount code MOM you'll get 25% off all of them. Now's the time to order your favorites or catch up on past block of the month designs.

Midget Blocks I took another tally of where we are with finishing up the Midget Blocks. I counted 21 blocks that we need from the original quilt. I should have some of the posted by the end of the week (that's tomorrow) and I'll add some notes to the Midget Block page I found one time where I duplicated a block. If you check your patterns - Block 7 and 71 are the same. I don't know how I managed to do that but as long as you get all 187 patterns from the quilt it won't matter. There are also several that are substitution blocks for some of the more difficult ones and I want you to have a list of those.

If you're on the mailing list you'll soon be receiving an email with a survey about an upcoming project. It's something I've been thinking about for a long time and decided that if I'm going to be busy this year I might as well be really busy! Everyone who completes the survey will be entered in a drawing for some great prizes so please take a few minutes to reply.

This is going to be a Sentimental Summer! I hope we can enjoy it together.

Just Takes 2â„¢ Benjamin Biggs Quilt Block 5

Advertisements:

It sure didn't feel very much like May 1st when I stepped outside this morning. Cold, rainy, gloomy weather. There were still piles of snow when we went to the cottage last weekend. I'm hoping they'll be gone when we get there tomorrow! It's a good thing we have our stitching to keep things cheery and today there's another block in the Just Takes 2 Benjamin Biggs quilt.

Benjamin Biggs Block 5-4

Block 5

This block is one of the papercut blocks like the first block. It shouldn't take you too long to do the center part and many of you have already appliqued your corner rosebuds in anticipation of the coming blocks. That's a wonderful idea if you have the extra time available. We'll be giving you the border pattern next month so you can start working on all those pretty scallops while you're making your blocks.

Benjamin Biggs Block 5-2 I really like the fabric in this block. It's a great red and yellow print I wish I had yards and yards of!

Benjamin Biggs Block 5 signature Here's a close up of the signature on this block.

It appears to be -
Mary Shaw
Jan. 18th 1947 or is it 1849 ???

I have to admit it looks more like 1949 to me which makes me wonder........if Benjamin and Elizabeth got married on January 11, 1849, about three months after the quilt was completed, was the block signed almost a year before their wedding. Would it really have taken that long for the quilting or was that block signed after the quilt was completed?

Benjamin Biggs Block 4 signature Some of you thought the date on last month's block looked more like 1849 making it even more questionable. Here's another look at that signature.
I'm making a special page over at Just Takes 2 with pictures of the signatures on all the blocks so you can study them closely. I'll lay them out according to how they appear in the quilt. It might look strange until next month when we explain the borders. The quilt doesn't seem to have been constructed in a totally traditional way. We'll let you know when the Signature Page is ready. Update: I'll add signature pictures to the page each month as the blocks come out - Just Takes 2 Benjamin Biggs Quilt Signature Page.

Benjamin Biggs quilt Block 5 I think the signature and inkings are a special part of this quilt. This month's block looked a bit like an ink blot and I thought it was kind of boring. Then the light bulb came on at about midnight last night. Just because my quilt isn't a friendship quilt doesn't mean I can't add the pretty inkings to it on my own!

Benjamin Biggs Quilt Block 5 center I haven't decided exactly what design is going in the center of this block. I thought about putting the initials of family members in each block with their birthdates. Maybe flowers, birds, butterflies, simple scroll motifs...........these are some of the things I've been pondering. It shouldn't be too hard to come up with something.

You might notice my block is a traditional red print on a creamy background. Well..........that's a long story for another day. Right now you should head over to Dear Jane to get your block.
