New Year – New Quilts!

Advertisements:

It was a wonderful Christmas at our house even though part of it I consider the Christmas that almost wasn't! We were part of the power outages that hit Michigan after the ice storm. We lost our power at 6am on Saturday the 21st and stayed out all of Saturday, Sunday and most of Monday.
Clutch and Zoe in fur
As you can see, the lack of heat and light had little effect on Clutch and Zoe. It did however have quite an effect on my Christmas preparations.
Power outage dec 2013
I managed to get one bath of Spritz cookies baked and we had most of our treats for Christmas dinner but I have supplies for lots of peanut butter fudge, three batches of cookies, sugared pecans and more that I'll be making the first week of January. It just stretches out the fun!

Have you thought about the quilts you want to make during 2014? I've been thinking about that for weeks now and fear my list requires more time than I'll ever find for sewing but I'm going for it! Even if I only gather and plan I'll be happy.

I haven't decided on all the Sentimental Stitches projects for 2014 but thought I'd share a few with you in case you want to add them to your list!

Video Thumb There are two new $5 Block of the Month quilts that were released a few weeks ago. The Cabot Cuties quilt has blocks the same 4 1/2" size as the Midget Blocks but the block designs are not the same. There's a combination of patchwork and applique blocks. You get 7 blocks each month for 14 months.
Cabot Cuties Blocks I'm making my blocks with Kaffe Fassett fabrics even though the designs were originally made in 1930s prints and solids. I love the way they're turning out.

The Scrap Savers Baltimore Applique quilt is a traditional applique quilt featuring 16" blocks. You'll receive one block per month and are encouraged to do what I'm doing - use up those scraps! Do you see the five different greens I used just in this one block?

Scrap Savers Baltimore Block 1
I'm pulling all kinds of reds, greens and whatever I need from my stash to make the blocks. It's a challenge for someone like me who loves to shop for fabric but I'm finding I have some pretty cool stuff right there in my stash!
You can learn more about both of these quilts and hear how the patterns are delivered directly to you ready for stitching - HERE. These will be available at the special price for a few more weeks before they make way for the next two quilts.

Midget Blocks
I think you'll all agree it's time to put the Midget Blocks to rest. I'm not going to drag this out trying to put a new block up every week. I'm putting the call out for help from someone who has time to help me with the drafting in EQ7 and we'll get the last 28 blocks done. I know someone sent me a note a while back about helping but I can't seem to put my hands on it. If you'd be interested in working on this with me on this please send me an email. There's a link in the sidebar.

IMG_0299wtmk Can you believe there's only a couple of days until we start the new Just Takes 2 Benjamin Biggs quilt? Brenda is excited, I'm excited and from what I'm reading on the Yahoo Group and Facebook Page, you are excited too! Brenda will have the first block for you on January 1 at Dear Jane. We'll take turns presenting a block on the 1st of every month. Don't worry, you'll be able to find all the details on the Basic Information Page for the Benjamin Biggs Quilt.

Dream Garden
With the Just Takes 2 quilt changing to blocks only on the first of the month I decided it would be a good time to have the Dream Garden quilt take the place of what you used to pick up on the 15th of the month. You can get the first block of the Dream Garden quilt on January 15. There are 20 applique with embroidery embellishment blocks, one embroidered block and the applique border. These blocks will always be there so if you miss a month or two it won't matter. You can just catch up on downloading them whenever you stop by. I'll put more details about the quilt on the Dream Garden page in a few days but you can add it to your list! Can you see me smiling? I know there's no way you could make all these quilts and still have time to feed yourself but if you're like me I can be pretty happy just knowing I'm collecting the patterns for future use.

That's all I can share for today but rest assured there's even more projects planned. It's going to be a fun year!

Some Exciting Fabric News!

Advertisements:

Are you as excited as I am about the new Mountmellick block of the month Di Ford is designing for Quiltmania magazine? Her sense of style and color are just wonderful and it's going to be a fun year working on her special quilt. Brenda Papadakis came across some of the fantastic stripe fabric Di used in her quilt and we thought we'd like to share it with others who are planning to make the quilt.

Isn't this just a beautiful piece of fabric? It's used in lots of different ways in Di's quilt and the "star" fabric in the center of the quilt.

We only have a limited amount of the fabric so when it's gone, it's gone. You can order it HERE.

This would also be a nice stripe to add to your stash if you're making hexagons or a Lucy Boston: Patchwork of the Crosses quilt.

The fabric is available by the half yard. Just order as many as you want and I'll cut it all in one piece.

Just Takes 2â„¢ Schoolhouse Quilt – Finishing Instructions ……………What’s Next?!?

Advertisements:

I'm writing this ahead of time because no matter now hard I try to convince myself the rest of the world works on Sunday it just doesn't seem right to me. It's not that I've never done it and I don't mind doing a few little things but I was raised believing Sunday is a day of rest, worship and family so hopefully what I write today won't sound too disjointed as you read it.

A lot has happened in the last few weeks and there's more to come but we need to take care of finishing up our 2013 Just Takes 2 Schoolhouse Quilt.

JT2 Schoolhouse Final Assembly

Just Takes 2 Schoolhouse Quilt 2013 - Final Assembly

I think you can see you're going to get plenty of practice working with connector corners making all those flying geese units! They really go faster than you think and you can always use them as a "leader/ender" project while working on something else. You'll have them done before you know it. You only need to make 120 of them!

If you missed out on the 2012 Just Takes 2 quilt, you have until midnight on Cyber Monday to take advantage of the special discount code that's in effect. You can get the complete set of patterns for 25% off by entering the discount code CYBER during checkout. In fact, you can use the discount code on any of the digital patterns in the online store.

Just Takes 2
The new Just Takes 2 web site is still getting it's makeover but will be ready soon. Several things needed upgrading and we want to make it easier for you to navigate. We also want to give it a look to reflect the new quilt! We will preserve all the great pictures you've uploaded while working on your quilts though. We wouldn't want to lost those - you do beautiful work! If you have pictures of your quilts from 2012 and 2013 you'd like included please email them to me and I'll get them posted for you along with anything you'd like us to know. I don't think the current "Share Your Quilt" feature will be functional going forward but I can put things up from my end.

jt2 museum
While we were at the Dear Jane Retreat a couple of weeks ago Brenda and I took a road trip to Lafayette, Indiana to visit the 2014-2015 Just Takes 2 quilt.  Maybe next week I can find time to tell you more about the road trip - my speeding ticket - the antique quilt in the window - it's quite a story! As we pulled up to the museum I was excited to get inside this adorable Victorian house....

and then Brenda remembered the quilt was housed in the more modern genealogy center. I must admit the lighting was much better for taking pictures but I sure would have liked just a sneak peek inside that old house! They had the quilt ready and waiting. We took almost 200 pictures!!!

Do you remember these hints?

    • The quilt is safely protected within a museum in the tri-state area around Michigan -  The quilt resides in the collection of the Tippecanoe County Historical Association in Lafayette Indiana.
    • There are more than two colors in the quilt -  The quilt is red, green and indigo on a creamy white background.

  • It has been published in a book  - The quilt appears on page 27 of Quilts of Indiana - Crossroads of Memories - Indiana Quilt Registry Project

You'll have until January 1st to get ready. Brenda will have the first block for you on that date and then we'll alternate between Sentimental Stitches and Dear Jane on the first of every month for 25 months making one block each month. We'll give you the border early on so you can work on it as you make your blocks. Would you like to see the quilt?

Just Takes 2 - The Benjamin Biggs Quilt

The quilt measures 100 inches square and was made as a wedding quilt for Benjamin and Elizabeth Biggs in 1848. We think you'll love the classic applique and inked sentiments from family and friends. The quilt has it's quirks and we'll share all of those with you too. Brenda has already been working on a couple of the blocks using reproduction fabrics pretty true to the original quilt. I on the other hand will be the rebel this time and work in non traditional colors and fabrics. I've already bought enough background for three quilts because I keep changing my mind about what I want to do!

If you'd like to add a special Just Takes 2 button to your blog for the Benjamin Biggs quilt you can get the code below -

Just Takes 2

We'll have everything you need to know on the updated Just Takes 2 web site within a couple weeks but if you just can't wait, you can plan on the following supplies based on the traditional colors-

Background - 10 yards
Green - 7 yards (we counted at least 5 different prints)
Red - 3 yards (we counted at least 8 different prints)
Indigo - 1/4 yard
