Advertisements:

I think it's pretty obvious to everyone how much I love applique quilts. It's pretty obvious that i have a great love for little quilt block too. I've been stitching 4 1/2" blocks since 1998 when the wonderful Dear Jane quilt came into my life.

I started offering pieced Midget Blocks from the 1930s Week by Week Sampler quilt in 2006. That seems like such a long time ago.

Even though the first 50 blocks have been retired there are still 75 free pieced blocks available.

and

and

and we even have.....

but we haven't had Applique Midget Blocks!!!

until now !!!

Midget Blocks - Applique is a set of 52 unique 4 1/2" applique quilt blocks to be used alone or with your pieced Midget Blocks. This first collection has a wide variety of designs including classic floral applique, baskets, art deco designs, hearts, fruit, baskets, individual flowers, Sunbonnet Sue and much more. Some of the blocks are adapted from my antique collection and some are patterns I've designed myself. A few have optional hand embroidery details and there are blocks for every skill level. Each block has color suggestions and drawings are full size. You can use them for hand or machine applique. They are available two ways. You can get the blocks as an instant download pattern or you can order them as a printed pattern. Either way - you're gonna love them!

If by any chance you don't have the first 50 pieced blocks in your collection. You can get those blocks as an instant download pattern or order them as a printed pattern too.

Special Note: Some of you have had problems navigating the web site in the last few days. We're still trying to track down the problem. If you have any difficulties please email me with as much detailed information as you can. I don't want anyone to have glitches in their stitches!

Beyond The Cherry Trees Block 23

Advertisements:

Clutch and I have been so busy working on the first border strip for next month's pattern that I almost forgot to share the "in progress" photos of Block 23 of our Beyond The Cherry Trees quilt.

It's a pretty classic block and I didn't make many changes except to round out the wreath and smooth some lines. I really try to resist the temptation to "make it all perfect" which is my nature. If you look closely you can see the layered flowers on all four sides of the wreath.

I thought it was interesting the way she made the bow. It looks like she took her strips of fabric just like ribbon and circled them around. I would have cut the shape to make them all round and smooth. I noticed the break in the wreath circle was right there in a prominent spot by the bow.

Here's a close up of one of the layered flowers where all of the color has faded from the fabric. We've talked before about the possibility of a pink or blue fabric that has lost all it's color and we can be pretty sure that's what happened here. The only problem is there are three layers to the flower and I doubt it had both pink and blue layers stacked on top of each other. More likely it was pink and white layers or blue and white layers. I opted to label the flowers as pink on the pattern but that's just a guess.

You'll want to be sure and use either your pink or blue in the buds next to the layered flowers. The buds is one place where you could bring in the opposite of the color you selected for the layered flower to use in at least one of the bud sections.

Isn't this flower adorable with its little red polka dot?

You'll want to be careful when doing the reverse applique on this flower.

And now for the hidden stitches! This flower was right in the center of the wreath.

These two leaves were down near the bottom

I almost missed this little leaf attached the the first flower I found.

And finally, two leaves tucked in around the outside of the wreath. All in all, a pretty great block.

Next month we'll start on those borders! Each side is different and filled with lots of great quilting. If you haven't downloaded this months block you can get it on the Beyond The Cherry Trees page.

Red, White & You! – Midget Block 125 – Tribute to Betty Ford

Advertisements:

Former first lady Betty Ford was laid to rest last week. She along with her husband, formerPresident Gerald Ford were from Grand Rapids, Michigan (my hometown) and are both now buried there at the Gerald R. Ford Museum.

I was in Grand Rapids when former President Ford was laid to rest and waited in line with many other to pay my respects. I'm in Traverse City for the summer so I couldn't pay my respects in person for the passing of Betty but felt a Midget Block in her honor was the least I could do. This Red, White & You Midget Block is called Betty's Choice. I hope you'll enjoy making it.

July 20th is always a difficult day for me and this year marks the tenth anniversary of my Dad's passing. We're sweltering under blistering heat not too different from the year he died but it's a bit more bearable for Clutch and I being in one of his favorite places. I miss you Daddy.............
