Everyone Needs A Hug

Advertisements:

My goodness! Between my Mom's passing, the shooting in Tucson Arizona, snow in 49 states of the US and more water in Queensland Australia than the entire world wants to see, I think we all need a hug and a bit of cheer so I'm going to put my big girl panties on and give it my best try!

Let's start with the newest member of the family.

DSC_2599small
I'd like to introduce you to Izzy. She's Paul and Angela's new puppy. She is such a sweet little girl, a bit shy with the guys and totally naive to the whole doggy world. She snuggles her 17 lbs. right across your chest with her head on your shoulder just like a baby. Looking at those feet of hers she probably won't be able to do that much longer but I'll enjoy it for now. Clutch, not so much.........he's a bit scared and not too happy his Mommy is cuddling someone else. He skipped his dinner last night in protest.   Izzy was one of 10 puppies rescued when their Mom died during childbirth and is a mix of Lab, Boxer and Pit. We all look forward to watching her grow and learn new things.

January's Beyond The Cherry Trees block is the center block from the quilt. When I got the quilt there was a big gaping hole right in the middle but I carefully spread it across my sewing table and stitched a piece of muslin underneath to hold it all together. The stitches aren't pretty but it sure helps.

In a perfect world (haha) there would be this great signature of the quilt maker stitched in this center block with the date and place the quilt was made.

jan9 342

Look closely, do you see where the quilting stitches are kind of bunched together and not as uniform as the other area? Can you tell what it is? Me either, so this is where my needle and brown thread come out along with a pair of magnifying glasses to go on top of my regular glasses.

jan9 348
You just start tracing the stitches.

jan9 349

Here's what I found. A cute flower a lot like what we've seen before so I started to look around a little more.

jan9 353

How about here? Do you see anything here?

jan9 355

Not bad........a nice leaf with a "cherry" circle in the middle. Back to the search......

jan9 358

This is a tricky one........so you see it?

jan9 359

I was really excited about this find. We haven't seen this design before. It almost looks like it started out as a leaf and somehow she added more leaves and a stem to it. I then moved on and did something I still can't believe I did..........

jan9 361

I took a pencil and made tiny dots where I could see stitches, This spot is not quite in the center of the block but close enough.

jan9 366
You can see it, it's there, a flower! I'll admit to taking some artistic liberty here and drafting this as a full flower and I also shifted it's position a little closer to the center to balance the applique shapes.

jan9 367

These are the treasured grapes. All we can see are the tufts of brown left from the purple print fabric. Way back when we started this project I was able to open one of the tufts enough to get a picture of the print and determine it's original color. I also took some artistic liberty here.

I actually drafted the block twice. The first time I drew all the grapes as 5/8" circles which was the most common size and straightened out the grapevine into a circle. After I finished I wasn't sure I liked it that way. True grapevines aren't perfectly round and all the grapes in a cluster aren't the same size so I started over giving our vine some it's original bend back and matching the grape circles as closely as possible to the fabric tufts that remain.

jan9 374

I usually like to use Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect Circles when I have circle shapes to applique but even with all the sizes she offers there just weren't enough that matched all the grapes so I pulled out one of the trustly old green circle templates I bought years ago (you can tell can't you) at the art supply store. They're more widely available now and I think you can even find them in the school supply section of most stores like Target and Walmart. I know this is fine for drawing on paper but how will I translate that to working with fabric? Some of the grapes are large enough I could back baste them but I think I'll be doing something else so watch for an upcoming Grape Tutorial.

jan9 368

The embroidery on this block is unusual to me too. You know how we wonder what came first, the chicken or the egg? Well, I wonder what came first, the stems or the grapes? They are stitched in a chain stitch meandering around the grapes going from the top stem downward. Fiona thought the thread might be linen or cotton. It's heavier than quilting thread. We think the blue color of the thread and fabric indicates a darker shade of green which has now faded to blue so the thread was most likely dyed to match the fabric. How cool is that considering how long ago that was done? I'm always in awe of the ingenious spirit of quilters, especially those who stitched before me!

jan9 370
As I said before, it's not a perfect world and I feel very confident is saying I don't believe there was a signature of any kind in the center block. If there is one hidden in the stitches , we're still looking. I won't discourage you by saying just how many grapes there are in this block but there are only two vines and four leaves to how hard can it be?

How about a little more fun..............

Remember me telling you Petticoats & Polka Dots was in the house? It's in the house and in the Online Store too. It's probably also in your local quilt shop as well but I have a couple of fat quarter bundles and panels I want to give away.

You can see all the different prints on here Blue Hill Fabrics web site

There are 19 fat quarters in each bundle.

There are two panels, one pink and one blue.

All you have to do is leave a comment between now and midnight EST., Tuesday, January 18, 2011 and on Wednesday the 19th we'll give Clutch a break and let Mr. Random Generator pick the winners and I'll announce them here.

Now to finish fixing supper and then I'll move the Midget Mania blocks to the regular Midget Block page for you so they're easier to find.

Beyond The Cherry Trees – Block 16 – Going in Circles

Advertisements:

Way back in October I selected this block to be the first of 2011 because I knew it would take a long time to complete. I love settling in with a 'winter project' after the holidays. I also had stacks of patterns and antique pictures I was ready to upload to the new membership section for the Sentimental Stitcher members but right after the Dear Jane Retreat things around here started to spin out of control and my life looks just about as bad as this months block.

jan9 370

Many of you know my Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's several years ago and for quite a while has been living in a memory care unit. Shortly after the Dear Jane Retreat in November she fell out of bed during the night and broke a bone in her face. Yes, there was a trip to the emergency room in an ambulance and boy, oh boy, one whole side of her face swelled up something terrible and turned every shade of black and blue you can imagine. After a few days, the swelling started to go down and she was beginning to recover. We took her for a scheduled follow-up appointment with the doctor and she checked out pretty good. Her bruises began to fade and I thought we were on the road to recovery.
Sadly, her bruises weren't the only things that were fading........and fading fast. Within a couple of weeks we were talking with Hospice because she was no longer able to stand or walk, didn't want to eat, couldn't really speak and was unresponsive for the most part. She continued to get a little worse each day and passed away very early yesterday morning. Her funeral is Wednesday and we've decided to have an indoor service so my son, who is also your Sentimental Stitches web site guru, won't have to try and navigate through the cemetery on crutches.

He slipped on the ice Dec. 23 and broke his leg. Ouch, ouch and Christmas eve at the Urgent Care Center is not how he wanted to spend his holiday.

I apologize to the new Sentimental Stitcher members. So many of the patterns, books and history information I had ready to upload had to be set aside. I will make it up to those of you who signed up early and the two block of the month quilts will start this month - just a bit late.

My nephew's want a heart shaped pillow for my Mom and I need to finish that yet tonight so we can take it to the florist in the morning for flowers. Pink roses is what the boys said. I'll try to remember to get a picture for you. I used some vintage off-white satin and embroidered antique lace. If I can keep my eyes open long enough I'm going to embroider each of the grandchildren's names on satin ribbon for the bow.

You can get started on the block and I'll fill you in on it's hidden stitches shortly.

Beyond The Cherry Trees – Block 15

Advertisements:

I hope everyone has been able to find little snippets of time to work on Block 15 of our Beyond The Cherry Trees quilt. Every month I continue to be amazed by the quilt and all it's hidden treasures.

While I was in Shipshewana last month for the Dear Jane Retreat I was honored to have Fiona, one of my Jane friends, spend some time with me looking over the quilt and sharing her observations. Bless your heart Fiona, you have more knowledge about applique quilts, Baltimore Album quilts in particular, in your little finger than I'll ever have in a lifetime.

Fiona lives in England but has traveled far and wide to study antique quilts. We both felt the layers in this flower were originally white or a creamy white like the background and red.

In this picture you can see little specks of brown that remain in the block. They are identical to the little tufts of brown we earlier found to be purple in the center block filled with grapes. We haven't done that one yet.

It's interesting the way the yellow and purple fabrics were alternated as the bottom layer in some of these flowers and as the top layer in others.

Here we have red buds appliqued on a red vase. Because the vase fabric is so deteriorated one has to wonder if it was a deeper shade of red because most of us wouldn't applique the same red on red.

If you look closely you can see the shape of a flower where the fabric is completely gone. I stitched around it so I could trace the shape.

Here's another little flower bud where the fabric is still strong and sturdy but there isn't a bit of color left in it. Fiona has seen fabrics in Baltimore Album quilts where the dye in certain shades of pink and blue fabric has faded away to white. Eureka!! The more we looked at the quilt, the more we could see where those colors were likely used.

Fiona shared with me two pieces of fabric showing the shade of blue we believe may have been used in the quilt. If I had to describe them I'd say a soft sky blue and a robin's egg blue.

Little Pink Stars

Here's an example of a double pink. This one is from Blue Hill Fabric's Little Pink Stars collection by Margo Krager. I think the 'no color' flowers in Block 15 were pink. A blue fabric was more likely used in other blocks and I'll let you know when we get to those.

There was no shortage of hidden stitches in the quilting. I think our quilter liked this block as much as I do. I almost missed the little flower tucked between the top of the vase and flower stem.

Some of you have noticed the Members Only area of the site has opened up and have signed up to be Sentimental Stitchers. In order to begin our testing we had to 'go live' as they say. The functions and pages seems to be working better than I am. I have hundreds of images and files to upload for the Sentimental Stitchers to access. I never imagined what an undertaking it would be to change the design of the site and move my studio from one end of the lower level to the other. Maybe it was turning the center room into a walk-in fabric room, maybe it was my Mom falling out of bed and breaking a bone in her face, maybe it's the holidays or maybe I'm just not moving as fast as my brain is. Tomorrow I promise to share more details, tell you about the Members Only 2011 Block of the Month quilts and more. My Petticoats & Polka Dots fabric collection is in the house and I have some Give Aways for the week between Christmas and New Years but today was Cherry Tree day.
